Salt & Straw spreads cheer this holiday season through a series of ice cream flavors with unique Oregon ingredients that re-imagine celebrated classics of holidays past. Taking inspiration from local communities celebrating the bounty of winter in Oregon, these flavors will warm your soul and satisfy cravings for those traditional treats and baked desserts. They also partnered with U.S. Congressman Earl Blumenauer to transform his legendary holiday fruit cake into an ice cream flavor and are donating all proceeds to local nonprofit Community Cycling Center (CCC) to provide children in need with bikes for the holidays through their annual Holiday Bike Drive.
All five holiday flavors are available to purchase as a pack or you can create a customized gift with the Pick Your Own variety packs of 5 pints from Salt & Straw’s current menu of flavors. The Holiday and Pick Your Own gift packs are $65 and available for nationwide shipping through Salt & Straw’s website www.saltandstraw.com. The holiday flavors are available for a limited time from November 28 through December 30, 2014.
Made with world famous mint from Oregon’s Seely Mint Farms, chocolate from Portland’s Holy Kakow and freshly crushed housemade peppermint candies. Seely Farms is special because they are the last mint-growing farm in Oregon’s Columbia County, which used to be the world’s center of mint oil production. They harvest their mint only once a year at the peak of growth creating the best peppermint oil to pair in our peppermint cocoa ice cream.
Bourbon Pecan Pie
Bourbon ice cream sets the stage for beautiful ribbons of pecan pie custard. It’s almost as the pecan filling is scooped straight from the pie and folded it into the ice cream. The bourbon is from Portland’s Eastside Distillery, barrel-aged for 4 years, and bottled at 96 proof; stronger than most bourbons on the market. This creates a spicy bourbon kick!
Every year, the eggnog created by Jeffrey Morgenthaler head bartender at Clyde Commons is highly anticipated by customers who can’t wait for it to come back on the menu. His recipe is recreated into Salt & Straw’s ice cream with flavor that is brimming with tequila, sherry and a hefty serving of nutmeg. If anyone is asking, YES, the ice cream is delicious with a little extra tequila poured over the top.
A frozen take on a body-warming English holiday treat. With chopped shortbread cookies and brandy soaked candied orange peels, currants and ginger, this makes for a delectable and aggressively spiced ice cream base. This is a perfect flavor to take a pint home and camp in front of the fire for this holiday season.
Congressman Blumenauer’s Fruit Cake
Since entering state legislature in 1972, Earl Blumenauer has been an anchor to help mold Portland into one of the best cities in the country to live in. Now, he is the countries top advocate for policies that support vibrant, safe communities. Each year, Blumenauer makes fruit cakes for all of his friends and family, and Salt & Straw worked closely with him to make his fruit cake in their kitchens and fold it into the ice cream! For this collaborative effort, we are donating all of the proceeds from this flavor to Community Cycling Center Holiday Bike Drive to provide bikes to children for the holidays.
