A pregnant Canadian news anchor received hate mail for her pregnant appearance while on the air and as time went by and her baby bump grew, so did the cruel content in this hate mail. Kristi Gordon, who is the on-air meteorologist with Global BC out of Vancouver, British Columbia, was literally pulled apart for her choice of maternity apparel while on the air, according to News Max on April 4.
Gordon, who is pregnant with her second child, knew what to expect because she received some of the same type of cruel mail when she was on the air with her first pregnancy. She decided to become pro-active this time around and she announced her pregnancy early on. When it seemed that she might skirt this hate mail for her second pregnancy, it came fast and furious as soon as her baby bump was visible.
On one of the segments of “News Hour PLUS,” Gordon and her co-workers discussed her pregnancy in the context of what people expect from the on-air personalities delivering their nightly news and weather. This segment got a lot of attention and it did seem as if it worked at curtailing the haters out there, but it didn’t.
Gordon decided to share some of these horrendous letters with her viewers. After doing so, she got a lot of support from people who thought the appearance of a pregnant woman is a beautiful sight.
According to Today, a lot of the hate mail centers on Gordon’s choice of maternity clothes, which are no different than the average pregnant woman dons during these modern times. Gone are the days that women dressed in tent-like apparel to cover-up any sign of a baby growing in their womb.
The form-fitting clothes worn by pregnant women today were what many of these comments stemmed from. “Cover-up,” “Buy some decent clothes” and stop wearing the “tight, tight tops,” are just a few of the comments targeting her wardrobe. One commenter told her she should “have more respect for you unborn child,” and “cover-up.”
“No one wants to turn on the news and sit and look at a heavily pregnant woman’s stomach hovering over the forecast graphics,” was yet another comment aimed at her because she is pregnant. The haters seem to forget that their own mothers had a baby bump before they were born.
She was able to ignore the majority of these comments, but a letter she received from a group of people really bothered her. The letter read:
“Nowhere on North America TV have we seen a weather reader so gross as you. Your front end looks like the Hindenburg and rear end a brick poop (insert swear word here) house. We now turn off Globel (yes, GLOBEL and not Global). Cover up or take time off. The Group.”
This was the letter that broke the camel’s back and prompted Gordon to share the letters that were considered hate mail with her viewers. These were the letters that started to roll out once she first started to appear pregnant on-air.
