The Sacramento Republic F.C. defeated the Portland Timbers at home 3-0 Saturday night for their third straight win. A record crowd of over 11,000 fans packed into Bonney Field to see the Republic F.C. take possession of first place in the USL Western Conference with the victory. Rodrigo Lopez, Mickey Daly and rookie Zeb Taublieb scored a goal each in the game. Jake Gleeson’s return to his old club where he led Sacramento to a USL Championship last year was scorched for three goals as he was peppered all night by the aggressive attacking offense provided by the Republic F.C.
A mild evening greeted the hometown fans as they entered the newly expanded Bonney Field. Saturday night’s matchup was a rematch of a game that occurred at Merlo Field on April 2 where the Republic F.C. lost to the Timbers 2 by the score of 2-1. This squad however was a different one that took to the pitch the last time they played and Sacramento was looking to avenge that heart breaking defeat. The three headed scoring monster of Justin Braun, Rodrigo Lopez and Octavio Guzman where part of the starting eleven whilst Patrick McLain made the start in front of the net. Jake Gleeson was manning the net for his club the Timbers 2 and he was respectfully greeted by the Tower Bridge Battalion who didn’t jeer or hurl insults at him as he took his position.
The first half of the game was a matchup of the Republic F.C.’s stingy defensive and the Timbers 2’s fast striking offense. After the two clubs battled to a standstill for the first ten minutes, Sacramento was able to outmatch Portland as they struck first a few minutes later when Rodrigo Lopez would score in the thirteenth minute with a quick striking goal giving the Republic F.C. a 1-0 lead. The Timbers 2 turned up the aggressive play as they continued to harass and harangue the Republic F.C. often frustrating them. But Sacramento would score again in the thirty-seventh minute when Mickey Daly would kick in a goal past the arms of Jake Gleeson giving his club a 2-0 advantage and hang on to that lead as they headed into the locker room with a two goal cushion.
Portland came out in the second half with a bit of gusto as they tried to catch Sacramento off guard with their swift and questionable play. They used tight passing and ball control along with slide tackling to maintain possession but even with those tactics they were unable to score or attacking McLain’s net. The Republic F.C. received two yellow cards for their violent reaction to the Timbers 2 on pitch play and their attempts to counteract them. Sacramento would score again in the eighty-second minute when rookie Zev Taublieb would scoot past the defenders and launch a goal into Portland’s net going up 3-0 and the score would remain that way until the final whistle blew.
Sacramento moves into first place in the Western Conference with the victory and Portland would fall to third place with the loss.
