Meditation has been used for centuries as a tool to reduce stress and calm the mind. However, if you have ever tried mediating it can be a task not easily mastered. Many people notice that their mind is clutter by thoughts of what needs to be done for the next day or an event that has happened during the day.

1. Schedule time to meditate: You need to start off by planning time to meditate. Even if you just carve out five minutes for the first week. Make it a point to put it on the schedule and then follow thru with doing it.
2. Create a space: Creating a space to meditate is not require but it can make it easier to meditate. If you spend time creating a place that you enjoy spending and feel relaxed you are more likely to stick with meditation.
3. Index to Thumb: Place your index finger to your thumb. Focus on feeling your heartbeat.
4. Close your eyes: Allow your eyes to fully relax and breathe inward.
5. Let your thoughts pass: I tell many of my clients to simply watch the thought pass by as if it was a cloud passing in the sky. Try not to over think it but just acknowledge the thought and let it pass.
6. Breathe Deeply: Many people find it easy to focus on the breath in the beginning. Count to four on the inhale and count to six on the exhale.
There is no perfect way to meditate. The important thing to remember is giving yourself time to quite the mind and reflect. If submerging yourself in a memory gives you relaxation then do that. If you rather focus on your breath then concentrate on rising and falling of your chest. The point is to relax and let go.

Remember that even though meditation can be done anywhere, creating a place in your home that feels peaceful can help you focus and turn inward during your meditation period.
