Last night’s Cooking Channel episode of Restaurant Redemption brings chef Ching-He Huang to Canton, Massachusetts to help revive a failing restaurant. Ching went to Golden China Restaurant & Sports Bar and meet with mother and daughter team of Sandy “Mama” Chen and daughter Judy Chen, the owners. The restaurant was started by Sandy’s father in 1978, very little has changed since then, but it was expanded to make it a Chinese sports bar that patrons refer to as “Chinese Cheers.” They also opened another place similar to the Golden China in Quincy that is doing very well.
The dining room was unappealing to Ching. The food got some good and some not so good rating; it was typical Americanized Chinese food. The chicken wings at a sports bar should always be excellent; but these were mediocre. When they stuck up for their food, Ching told them there was no need for her to be there. They then agreed to let her work her magic; so they closed the place for a few days to start the redo.
She started with the chicken wings, doing General Tso’s Chicken Wings. Both Mama and Chef Joe liked their own wings better. Judy liked them better, but knew how much resistance Mama always gave her. She knows her parents are getting older and will be retiring soon. Ching took Judy and Mama to the original “Cheers” bar in Boston where the manager told them to go with the flow and do what the customers like. Back at the restaurant; they revamped the pizza with some Chinese fusion. But when they saw the beautiful dining room that had not been updated in 37 years; they loved it. With about a hundred people waiting outside, the place was jumping like it had not done in ages. Mama and Judy were very pleased in their newly thriving restaurant thanks to Ching and her crew of Restaurant Redemption.
