The DC Independent Film Festival will begin on February 25th, and go until March 1st. The festival includes narrative features, short films, documentaries, animation, student films, etcetera.
We Got Your Back, was created by writer and director Viktor Hertz, and producer and cinematographer, Johann Gustavsson. Both from Stockholm, Sweden, they recruited actors Rebecka Nyberg, Lukas Loughran, and sound engineer Philip Jurdell.
The short’s inspiration and intention are very openly present in the film’s synopsis:
‘There is so much to feel guilty about nowadays, when you think about it. Sure, we all care about the environment, but honestly, don’t you just want to toss all the junk in the same waste bin, sometimes? What if there was a simple service that got your back covered, on a monthly direct debit plan?’
The story sees a woman canvassing on the street and stopping a man whilst he smokes a cigarette. When she asks him how often he experiences guilt, his attention is hers. This is both a dig at eco-friendly, green personalities in today’s world, and an agreement of how individuals react collectively toward a system which supports the degradation of humanity, destruction of the eco-system, as they make money from the destruction of it all, but also as they make the majority believe in temporary redemption.
The two converse about what it will take, perhaps naming a price, to remove the sense of remorse from the man’s mind. In the course of three minutes, the man is no longer empathetic with his surroundings as the woman asks him to push past his inhibitions to see whether or not giving money to take care of his actions actually removes the sense of caring.
Whether or not they realized the impact of the piece, this is essentially a great tool for educating the world’s population to realize that ‘annoying’, ‘unnecessary’ or ‘bothersome’ practices to reciprocate appreciation toward the earth are actually none of the above.
We Got Your Back will be playing in the 8:00-10:30PM block on Wednesday, February 25th. Tickets are $5 to $25 depending on the event.
