Desert rock may be a new genre of rock ‘n’ roll, but it seems The Doors Robby Krieger is into it. Last year he played on former KYUSS guitarist John Garcia’s “Her Bullets Energy” from his first solo album (see related articles below). War Drum, also from the Desert Rock movement emanating out of the Palm Springs area, announced yesterday, February 23 that Robby Krieger will be playing on their new album.
Scant little is known about the album at this point. The band put out a teaser video (see above) that shows Krieger in the studio jamming, maybe playing some sitar influenced guitar then cuts to the words War Drum, with Robby Krieger of The Doors, coming soon. There is more unknown than known about the album, it is thus far untitled. No release date is as of yet available. The known, it will have ten tracks, three of which will feature Krieger. The initial release of the album will be digital. They’re planning a vinyl release shortly thereafter.
War Drum has been together since 2010 and has released three digital albums “At Old Trails,” “Fortune Finder,” and “Wilderness Children.” War Drum has a very Hendrix vibe/influence in their sound, but aren’t copying Hendrix. They meld their sound in with other influences and fill out their sound with a very rock jam orthodoxy that gives them a unique and fresh sound. It is the difference between influence and copying. Kurt Cobain and Nirvana mixed punk with pop, and created grunge which became all the rage in the early 90’s. War Drum could be doing the same for psychedelic, although that label may be as limiting as it was for The Doors, who were a good hard rocking band. War Drum has that same hard rocking quality to their music.
The band may not be totally solidified yet, or in a state of flux. War Drum members are Jack Kohler on keyboards and vocals, Ehren Groban guitar and bass, Peter Leighton on drums, and Robert Owen. The band recently took a break for Groban to tour with John Garcia. If you want to know more about War Drum they have all the usual accoutrements of a modern rock group: website, Facebook fanpage, twitter. They currently have an indiegogo crowdsourcing campaign to finance a spring tour across Europe as well as to print vinyl copies of their new album, the one that will feature Robby Krieger. War Drum’s music can be found on Amazon as well as iTunes.
