“Look, up in the sky, it’s a bird! It’s a plane! No! It’s Free Comic Book Day! That’s right kids, Free Comic Book Day has returned to Stamford Conn’s premier comicbook shop, A Timeless Journey (2 Eighth Street, Stamford) on Saturday May 2nd. On that day (one day after the premiere of Avengers: Age of Ultron in theaters), comicbook shops all across the country will be celebrating the annual event of Free Comic Book Day (FCBD). For the past 13 years the first Saturday in May has been celebrated as an industry-wide event of one of the true American forms of art, the comicbook.
So, on Saturday May 2nd comicbook shops all across the United States (and throughout the world) will, once again, be celebrating Free Comic Book Day. Here in Stamford, Free Comic Book Day will once again be celebrated in earnest at A Timeless Journey, 2538 Summer Street. Paul Salerno, owner of at A Timeless Journey is naturally a huge fan of the event and has prepared for a great celebration. “Free Comic Book Day’s has always been an enormously popular event with my customers,” Paul said, “So, once again we expect this year’s celebration to be a blow-out event.”
Overall participation in the event comes from just about every comicbook publisher in the U.S. from the biggest publishers to small, independent vanity presses, plus comic book fan web sites, news magazines, and more. Stores participating in the event will be giving away a select group of nearly 50 special comics that have been prepared specifically for the event (the largest number of comics ever offered for FCBD) So while you can’t simply just take any comic book from the rack and leave, there is a wide assortment of comics that are available to all sorts of fans. These 50 comics range from complete issues reprinted especially for Free Comic Book Day to anthologies of upcoming material, to promotional issues designed to showcase the best material that a publisher has to offer, to all-new content specifically designed for FCBD.
This year, Comic Book companies that are providing material to support the event include: Archie (Dark Circle Comics), Bongo Comics (The Simpsons), Dark Horse Comics (Fight Club), DC Comics (Divergence, Teen Titans Go), Marvel (The Avengers, Secret Wars), Top Cow Comics, (Tales of Honor), Valiant, New England Comics (The Tick), Chapter House (Captain Canuck), IDW (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles), and many others.
Paul feels that — given the success of recent success of comic book related films (including Captain America: The Winter Soldier, X-Men: Days of Future Past, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, as well as the favorable buzz surrounding the upcoming Avengers, and The Fantastic Four) that this year will be a very big day for us. “With the recent slate of comic book-based movies being among the most successful in the last few years, comic books themselves have enjoyed a huge resurgence in popularity!” This is why Paul has stocked his store with tons of comics and comic-related merchandise, including trading cards, toys, models, and more!
Comicbooks were created in the early days of the 20th Century in America when publishers began gathering together the weekly comics from newspapers and began reprinting them in digest-size magazine format. Currently comics feature a wide range of diverse storylines that capture the imagine of the reader, and have survived the dominance of radio, the ubiquity of TV, the spread of color and sound pictures, the rise of videogames, and the growing availability of the Internet. That’s worth celebrating in our book, so to learn more about comics and Free Comic Book Day come on out to A Timeless Journey, 2538 Summer Street and talk to Paul Salerno on Saturday May 7th.
