For those whose dream is to live in a home high on a hill overlooking the San Francisco Bay, Sausalito’s The Inn Above Tide serves as a great alternative. With unparalleled sweeping views of San Francisco, the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, and Alcatraz and Angel Islands, The Inn Above Tide is a Bay Area hotel like no other.
As one of these dreamers who hopes one day to rise each morning with the Bay waters just outside my window, I am indulged for 24 hours with our spectacular room that sits, literally, above the tide. Kayakers wave as they glide by our spacious deck where we enjoy a glass of wine. “I could be very happy living here,” says my San Francisco born and bred husband who becomes instantly revitalized whenever he is near his hometown. And somehow, looking at the City skyline is even more magical than staying within it.
The Inn Above Tide is just minutes north of the City and is easily accessible by either the Golden Gate Bridge or a picturesque 30 minute ferry ride from San Francisco’s Pier 43 1/2 or the Ferry Building. It is the only luxury hotel in Northern California where every room is on the water. While the hustle and bustle of tourist heavy Sausalito is right outside the hotel’s front door, all rooms at The Inn Above Tide are oriented toward the Bay, ensuring that guests find only peace and tranquility – and that spectacular view.
The Inn’s rooms are sumptuous and include wood burning fireplaces, soaking tubs, plush beds and bedding, sophisticated furnishings and decor, Bulgari toiletries, and artfully curated honor bars. In-room spa services are offered as is free use of bicycles. Additional amenities include complimentary morning newspaper delivery, evening turndown service, overnight shoe shine, an extensive DVD library, complimentary wireless high-speed internet, stereo and CD player with iPod docking station, binoculars, current magazines, and HDTV with premium cable, HBO and DVD player.
The friendly staff is knowledgable about area activities and dining options, and can help make reservations and provide transportation options. But with so many activity and restaurant choices within a short walk of the Inn, one need only step outside to enjoy all that the charming Mediterranean-style village has to offer: boutique shopping, galleries, Heath Ceramics, and destination-worthy cuisine.
Two of the Inn’s most generous perks are the evening wine reception and the continental buffet breakfast. From 5:00 – 7:00pm daily, guests can enjoy a choice of white or red wine and a variety of cheeses and fruits in the Inn’s drawing room. This same location features a gorgeous continental breakfast spread from 7:00am – 10:00am daily. Coffee and tea, fruit, quiche, cheese, yogurt, bagels and delicious pastries from San Francisco’s Crepe and Brioche Bakery are all offered. Guests are welcome to take items back to their rooms, but many prefer to enjoy the company of others in the welcoming drawing room.
The Inn Above Tide was originally constructed by William “Bill” McDevitt in 1961 as an apartment building which he redesigned in 1995 as a luxury boutique hotel. McDevitt spent 60 years in California, 35 of those in Sausalito. A born entrepreneur, his businesses encompassed contracting, restaurants, property development and art galleries. Over the past 20 years, the McDevitt family has continued to maintain the luxury property with great care and attention to detail.
If a move to Sausalito, Tiburon or Belvedere is your dream, but not in your imminent future, The Inn Above Tide proves to be a more than adequate, if not superior, substitute.
