Officials at a small elementary school in Texas forced the students to drop their pants in an attempt to find the child who left feces on the floor of the gymnasium. Needless to say once parents got wind of this ludicrous investigation they were furious, according to First To Know on Jan. 29.
What did they expect to find on the children by inspecting their underwear? One of the many outraged parents from Gustine spoke to the media and said that the school officials separated the boys and girls for this inspection. They were made to pull down their pants in different rooms, which did nothing to ease the minds of the irate parents.
Maria Medina told the reporters “I was furious… I mean furious,” she said to the cameras. “If you can’t do your job or don’t know what you are doing, you need to be fired.”
According to WFAA 8 ABC Local, Medina’s daughter, 11-year-old Eliza Medina, said that she “felt uncomfortable” and that she didn’t want to do it. She also said that she felt like they violated her privacy.
Eliza was one of about two dozen kids who were herded into a room and told “to pull down their pants.” The kids were told that they were going to be checked for something, but they did not elaborate to the kids just what that something was.
It is hard to fathom that anyone would come up with this type of plan in the first place, never mind the fact that other adults went along with it. Ken Baugh, who is the superintendent of schools for the district said that he does not condone the school officials’ actions.
Baugh said earlier in the investigation that the school officials only asked the children to drop their pants partially, seemingly in defense of what was done. That was not the case claim the kids.
Whether the children were expected to drop their pants or pull them down just a little bit is besides the point. This was a blatant invasion of the children’s personal rights.
Maria Medina explained that the school’s teachers and staff have been finding poop left on the gym floor of the school recently. For some reason they apparently thought that by pulling down the pants of the students, this would somehow offer up evidence as to who the culprit is.
Were they looking for skid-marks in the underwear? This wouldn’t have proved a thing among this age group.
When Maria’s daughter Eliza first found out she needed to pull her pants down, she protested, but was told she “had to because all the kids had to.” The superintendent is hoping to have this investigation wrapped up by Wednesday, after he has spoken with all the parties who were involved.
No matter what the findings, the school board meeting that’s on the calendar for Thursday is a destination for many of the parents this week. They plan to demand that someone be held accountable for this horrendous act.
This small Texas town, which is located about 90 miles from Dallas Fort Worth, is home to only 457 people. It is a close-knit community and this awful deed was something that left many who live there not only outraged, but also perplexed as to what the school was thinking.
