Super Bowl betting is running rampant today with many trying to cash in on a piece of the action if their favorite team should win the big game. Most of these bets have money waiting at the end of the game, but that’s not the case for two upper-crust art museums.
Two famous museums, one from the Boston area and the other from Seattle, put a wager on the Super Bowl this year and that bet is making headlines. These “high-brow” institutes are looking at winning a masterpiece on a canvas when their team brings home the trophy, according to Time Magazine on Jan. 31.
If Tom Brady and his New England teammates bring the win home for Boston, then the Seattle Art Museum will have to fork over a painting by Albert Berstadt that is titled, Puget Sound on the Pacific Coast. If Russell Wilson and his teammates from the Seahawks are handed the Super Bowl trophy, then the Clark Art Institute of Williamstown, Massachusetts, will offer up their painting by Winslow Homer, which is titled West Point, Prout’s Neck, according to DBTechno.com.
This wager lets the winner display the painting in their museum for a period of three months. The Seattle Art Museum Director Kim Rorschach reports that she is not the least bit worried about the odds on Seattle for winning this game.
Rorschach said she is “totally confident that the Seahawks will prevail, no question in my mind.” She also reminded everyone how Seattle fared in the championship game, “we pulled that out,” said the museum director.
Both these famous artists have ties to Massachusetts as Bierstadt, who painted Puget Sound on the Pacific Coast, was born in Germany, but raised in New Bedford. This is town is outside of Boston and it’s a well-known fishing port. While Homer was born in Boston it was the area of Prout’s Neck in Maine where he died that he liked to call home.
Once the Super Bowl teams were in place, the Seattle Museum director contacted Clark’s director and asked if they wanted to do this wager and the answer was apparently, “yes.” The paintings were selected because they highlight nature found in the Northwest and Northeast. Now it’s just a waiting game to see if the folks in Massachusetts will have a new painting to look forward to for the next few months, or if it will be Seattle whose residents get the extra masterpiece in their neck of the woods.
While the winner of the Super Bowl is the main bet of the day, this game is offering a lot of side bets, like the one mentioned in the video above. There is actually a wager on whether or not Katy Perry exposes her cleavage in tonight’s game!
