From Friday, November 28 through January 1, 2015, visitors can be dazzled by nearly 4 million lights at the annual Clifton Mill Christmas lighting display in Clifton, Ohio (30 miles east of Dayton).
Legendary Lights of Clifton Mill Built in 1802 and one of the largest water-powered grist mills still in existence, Clifton Mill offers its legendary Christmas lighting display that features nearly 4 million lights illuminating the mill, the gorge, the riverbanks, trees and bridges, including a 90 foot wooden covered bridge that is highlighted with a synchronized lights and music show. Visitors can also see a 100 foot “waterfall” of sparkling, twinkling lights.
The Clifton Mill lights have been featured in Ohio Magazine and Midwest Living Magazine.
Another attraction at Clifton Mill is an animated Miniature Village that includes riverboats that light up, a train, a 1950’s drive-in theater that shows old film clips on its screen, a frozen pond with ice skaters, a football field with a game in progress, a light parade on Main Street and a county fair complete with a moving ferris wheel and bumper cars.
There is also a Santa Claus Museum at Clifton Mill which includes over 3000 examples of Santa Claus on display, some dating back as far as 1850.
Flour is still produced at Clifton Mill and at the store you can purchase items like bags of buck wheat flour, yellow cornmeal and pancake mix (whole wheat, apple-cinnamon and blueberry).
The gates at Clifton Mill open every evening at 5 p.m. and the lights go on at 6 p.m. Gates close at 9:30 p.m. and the lights are shut off at 10 p.m. Clifton Mill closes at 8 p.m. on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.
Admission to the Clifton Mill lights is $10 per person (7 and older). Children 6 and under are free. Parking is free. Saturday is the busiest night for viewing the lights while Monday through Thursday are the least crowded.
Hot dogs, soup, BBQ pork sandwiches, cornbread, cookies, pie, popcorn, hot chocolate and soft drinks are available for purchase.
An Interesting Note: It takes 6 men almost three months to put up all the lights at Clifton Mill.
