Maybe finishing as the year end number one player in women’s tennis and a 18th Grand Slam title should have been a clue that more was coming. And to no one’s surprise, Serena Williams won the WTA Player of the Year Award.
“I’m really grateful and humbled to receive this award,” Williams said. “It’s been an amazing year. I’m truly blessed to be playing at this level this far into my career. I feel incredibly supported by my team, my family, the tennis community and the fans. I’m just so happy – thank you!”
And by winning the Emirates Airline US Open Series before her US Open title,Williams pocketed $4mllion which was the biggest cash award in men’s or women’s tennis.
This is the sixth WTA Player of the Year Award for Williams. Only Steffi Graf(8) and Martina Navratilova(7) have won it more.
