Shame on liberalism. Blacks in America have been sold out by liberals according to Shelby Steele in his new book, Shame. He writes his latest with more than a casual familiarity with liberal buy-out of African-Americans in the U.S.
Steele writes that liberal policies have harmed more than helped black Americans, as judging from high rates of crime, divorce, unemployment, high-school drop outs, and unfinished college educations. Of all black births in America today, 72 percent of them are to single women, imbuing family values with a sluggish start among children in fatherless families.
Affirmative action, multiculturalism and welfare programs were put in place to ‘help’ black Americans but have failed at that as well as failing to liberate them or advance their fortunes. In the opinion of Shelby Steele, liberal policy is the problem with race relations in this country. He has a right to his own opinion but stands particularly qualified to have the one he holds.
Steel is the product of a biracial marriage where biracial really means black. His mother is white, but Steele grew up in a black neighborhood, the usual for a family begotten of biracial parents in 1944. He belonged to neither the black race nor the white, but when regarded by others, it was as a black – with all that that entailed in post-WWII America.
Steele writes that
Liberalism in the twenty-first century is a moral manipulation [designed] to justify overreaching public policies and programs.
Liberals seek an equality for blacks on demand from society through policy rather than by colorblind accomplishments by individuals of any race
Steele suggests such policies arise from America’s guilt over the sin of past slavery in efforts to eradicate the terrors of labeling white liberals as racist. Liberal policies demand favor for blacks rather than removing the barriers prohibiting them from succeeding on their God-given talents and merits. Steele attacks liberalism for the condescending politgeist it employs to gain power.
Liberalism expresses its inborn racism in the way it … hardens the idea of [black] victimization into a currency of liberal power”
Too much ‘giving’ has occurred. Too much free stuff is thrown to minorities. Policies that “bestow” rather equalize opportunity rob recipients of self incentive and personal achievement.
Steele concludes in Shame that blacks sold themselves out by placing race in American society in the hands of liberals.
[Liberals]left us pleading with government, not for freedom… but for ‘programs’ and ‘preferences’ that would be a ladder to full equality. The chilling result is that now… we remain…in the position of inferiors and dependents.
Liberal Americans are not going to like what Shelby Steele has to say. Shame points the finger at Party policies that attempt to seek hope and change in all the wrong ways. Blacks would like nothing better than to help themselves by liberal policy getting the heck out of their way.
