This week Sherwin-Williams announced its Color of the Year 2015 is Coral Reef (SW 6606), an upbeat and optimistic hue that signals its time for renewal. The uplifting, vivacious hue with floral notes is the perfect mélange of pink, orange and red that can be used to liven up any space.
Coral Reef is a hue in the palette named Buoyant, one of Sherwin-Williams four color palettes that are trending in 2015. Coral Reef captures floral components, which are prominently featured in current fashion trends. The three other palette colors are reminiscent of vintage floral patterns, influenced by natural-healing botanicals and the trend for green urban spaces.
“Coral Reef embodies the cheerful approach to design that we’re seeing for the coming year. Its unexpected versatility brings life to a range of design aesthetics, whether traditional, vintage, cottage or contemporary. Simply add this carefree color to your home’s palette and watch your creativity blossom,” said Jackie Jordan, director of color marketing, Sherwin-Williams.
According to Jordan in a recent interview, the deciding factors for choosing the color of the year are what is resonating with consumers. There appears to be a brightened outlook for 2015, which translates into selecting a color that is energetic and floral-based (as flowers bring joy). Coral Reef is energetic and versatile. It has the vibrancy to stand alone whether as an accent wall or an accessory piece; it reigns beautifully when complemented by other Sherwin-Williams colors such as Cotton White and Black Fox and it can be sophisticated when paired with metals or natural elements.
In a more subtle ambience, Coral Reef works with warm neutrals such as Sedate Gray or buttery yellows like Hubbard Squash. Driftwood, medium wood tones and metal finishes also complement its flower-garden hue.
Each year, Jordan and other Sherwin-Williams color experts research color influences from around the world to determine the annual color forecast and the Color of the Year. Color Forecast 2015 is comprised of 40 colors grouped into four palettes. In addition to the Buoyant palette in which Coral Reef resides, the forecast includes the Chrysalis, Voyage and Unrestrained color palettes. And now that these color palettes have been determined, Jordan and her crew of experts are already working on what will be trending in 2016 for future predictions of colors.
