Choice of one to three days of snorkeling with sharks in South Sea Cruises’ new “Ultimate Encounters” program launched April 1 is now available for adventurers seeking the ultimate underwater shark experience.
Starting in Port Denarau on the mainland, participants cruise to the island of Kuata in the Yasawa Island group to snorkel with Black Tip and White Tip Reef Sharks up to six feet in length. The snorkeling locale in a shallow reef offers safe, clear visibility for thrill seekers as well as families and others curious about these legendary creatures. According to South Sea Cruises spokesperson Lailanie Burnes, “the White Tip Reef Sharks are the dominant species and are by nature inquisitive and won’t be afraid to check out our guests; whereas Black Tips are, by contrast, timid.”
You will snorkel with experienced guides who have spent hundreds of hours getting to know the resident sharks, their behavior and who closely monitor the finned creatures during all snorkeling experiences to assure the safety of all guests. In addition to spotting up to six sharks in the hour-long experience, you’ll also see other sealife and spectacular coral formations. Should you not spot any sharks during your snorkel, South Sea Cruises offers a complimentary cruise within three days so you can try again.
The island, itself, a two-hour scenic cruise from Port Denarau, boasts a spectacular white-sand beach, turquoise waters surrounding tall rock formations, and Barefoot Kuata Island Resort, a small rustic accommodation which serves as the base for the stay. Package options include a day cruise with lunch; two-days with meals and overnight at Barefoot Kuata; and three days with two nights at the resort including meals. Additional activities are also offered.
