Number one will take on number two in the west when the Seattle Sounders FC take on the LA Galaxy Saturday November 3rd 5pm ET at the Stub Hub Center in Carson, California. Game time for the two legged series will be 5pm ET and will be show on ESPN and ESPN Dep.
The two foes are so familiar with each other, the classic clique ” familiarity breeds contempt “best describes the Sounders FC and LA Galaxy’s feelings toward each other. The two clubs have been bitter rival’s since 2007 when Seattle entered MLS and made it know it was going to be the biggest and baddest club in North America.
The statement brought some raised eyebrows from the LA Galaxy who had Landon Donovan, Cobi Jones and David Beckham(2008) on their roster. Ever since then it’s been about respect, giving it and getting it.
The two legged Western Conference showdown between the two will go along way in setting a marker in the storied rival.
Three keys to a win:
Both teams offer some of the most lethal strikers in the league if not the planet. Sounders FC ‘s 65 goals scored were second only to LA’s 69. Obefami Martins(17), Clint Dempsey (15)and Lamar Neagle (9) lead the way for Seattle while Robbie Keane (19), Gyasi Zardes(16) and Landon Donovan ( 10) where the leaders for LA.
The key to stopping either side will be the respective defense’s ability to stay compact, be disciplined on set pieces and communicate with each other and the goal. The above mentioned goal scorers do not need much room, or time to create magical moment in the case of a flat footed goal keeper or a lagging defender.
This will be where the West will be won. The ability to hold the ball long enough for the above mentioned to find a seam for a shot will be critical. LA’s Junino, Marcelo Servas, Baggio Husidic and Stefan Ishizaki are capable of making that one pass that can free a forward for a game changing shot.Look for LA to overload the right side of the field.
Sounders FC will counter with Brad Evans, Lamar Neagle Marco Poppa and hopefully a health Osvaldo Alonso.
Alonso is Seattle’s best defensively midfield will be a game time decision due to a hamstring injury. Alonso will be needed to stop the Galaxy attack that will start from the middle of the pitch.
Alonso’s ability to anticipate passes and jump routes much like a cornerback in the NFL is critical if Seattle is to get a favorable result.
Seattle will stay compacted and lay deep in it’s defensive half and look to counter attack with Dempsey picking up the ball in the middle of the field and looking for outlet passes to a streaking Martins.
Omar Gonzalez and Chad Marshall are both up for MLS Defender of the year trophy. That pretty much says it all.
Both teams are solid, disciplined and battle tested on defense. Seattle will look to bring De Andre Yedlin down field in the second half if the game is tied with the hopes of bagging a late away goal.
Robbie Rogers and A.J DeLaGarza are quick and deceptive and will surely make a run or two towards the Seattle goal.
The ability of either team to impose it’s will on the other will be key. Both teams will go at each other, LA full throttle and Seattle a conservative zone defensive attack. Each teams player will need to stay focused in the teams overall goal and not get swayed by the heat of the moment. Needless fouls and yellow cards could be the deciding factor.
