Chuck Souzer of Sarasota, Bill Matley of Venice and Jerry Goulding of Port Charlotte won two events each in last weekend’s 23rd annual Senior Open Championship Tournament, conducted by the Sarasota-Manatee County USBC Bowling Association at AMF Venice Lanes.
Souzer had the top nine-game handicap all-events score in Division A (ages 50-64) with 2,315, and he paired with Craig Ripley of Palmetto for the Division A doubles championship with 1,439. In addition, Souzer was runner-up in Division A singles with 771.
Matley claimed the Division B (ages 65-up) all-events crown with a total of 2,146, and he was a member of Team Olsen, which captured the four-player event with a score of 2,827. Other members of the winning team were Clyde Stary, Sue Olsen and John Hoppe.
Goulding won Division B singles with a handicap total of 769, and he teamed with Richard Garber of Venice for the B doubles title with 1,480. And the Division A singles championships went to Beth Owen-Cipielewski of Sarasota with 829.
Finishing second to Team Olsen in the four-player standings was DAV Nokomis — consisting of Carl Frank, Mark Reichmuth, Josef Leppig and Gary Janes — with a score of 2,817, and third-place Team Williams of Sarasota — consisting of John Long, Manuel Fontanot, Phillip WIlliams and Hitch Baier — totaled 2,751.
In addition to Souzer and Ripley, the remainder of the Division A doubles cashers were: Lee and Cee Butler of Sarasota (1,427), Robert Yoder and Jim Ord of Sarasota (1,417), John Kievith and Bruce Kintz of Sarasota (1,407), Beth and Keith Cipielewski of Sarasota (1,401) and Olsen and Hoppe of Venice (1,376). And the runner-up team in Division B doubles was Rudy Troyer and Leon Wagler of Sarasota (1,456).
Following Owen-Cipielewski and Souzer in A singles standings were: James O’Gorman of North Port (764), Fontanot (759), Kintz (757), David Abate of Cranston, R.I. (755), Mike Hudson of Osprey (722) and Paul Giles of North Port (700).
With 768, Ray Lofthouse of Bradenton was only one pin shy of Goulding’s winning total in B singles, while the remainder of the cashers were: Bill Magruder of North Port (737), Jim Beckwith of Sarasota (725), Troyer (723), George Benda of North Port (694) and Gary Krowka of North Port (691).
In addition to Souzer, the rest of the A all-events prize winners were Owen-Cipielewski (2,298), Kintz (2,219) and Fontanot (2,196), while finishing behind Matley in B all-events were Lofthouse (2,116) and Frank (2,111).
