zoomdune.com spoke with Alternative Pregnancy Center’s Director, Vickie Davis, about being on the front lines of choosing life.
EC: How long have you been with the Alternative Pregnancy Center (APC)?
I’ve been here five-and-a-half years, and I’ve been the Director for one year. We have three staff and twenty-eight volunteers.
EC: What services does APC offer?
First are free pregnancy tests, so we cater to the abortion-vulnerable client, girls who feel like they have no other choice. We let them know there is a better way and give them support so they can choose life for their baby. Then we provide educational opportunities. They learn about pregnancy, what to expect when the baby’s born, how to bathe a baby, how to feed a baby. And we offer Baby Bucks, basically a fake money program. When they come to class they earn Baby Bucks, and then take those Baby Bucks and buy diapers and wipes and baby clothes that we have in our boutique.
On the Alternative Pregnancy Center Web Site, we have all the information anyone might need if they’re concerned about being pregnant.
EC: Do you have success stories about mothers who’ve decided to keep their babies?
One young mom was seventeen and doing drugs. She’d grown up never believing that abortion was the right choice. But when she said, “Oh my goodness, I can’t believe I’m pregnant, I can’t be a mother,” she actually considered abortion. She came to confirm she was pregnant. As we loved and encouraged her, she ended up choosing life. And that baby ended up being twins. She found hope through Christ and is turning her life around.
Some mothers keep in contact with us. But the best part is when we’re out in the community and APC gets mentioned. There’s always a woman that says, “I was a client there eighteen years ago.” One lady said, “When I was pregnant, I went there, I kept my baby and he’s now seventeen and doing well.” It’s encouraging.
EC: Is there a pattern to women choosing to have an abortion?
Unfortunately, it is usually under pressure from the parents. Because their child is high accomplishment, they have plans and a baby would mess it up. She’s got to have an abortion so her life won’t end. There are a lot of poverty-level people who choose abortion, but I see more in the middle-class.
EC: What would you say to someone who’s concerned about a pregnancy or considering an abortion?
“Don’t panic.” Usually the first thing is to hurry up and make a decision about getting rid of it. But you have time, so think it through and do as much education as you can on understanding your options. Every woman has a choice. But a lot of women make an abortion decision because they don’t feel they have the choice, so they quickly decide, and then regret it. The best thing is to research it, understand it, learn what it is and then make an educated decision.
EC: APC is celebrating their 25th anniversary soon. What have you got planned?
It’s Saturday April 25th at 7:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Merritt Island, Fla. All our partnering ministries are getting together so Brevard County will know that we’re a pro-life county. It’s an opportunity to join the team for life, because life is valuable.
Pam Tebow will be our guest speaker. She’s going to share about her choice for life for Tim Tebow, former quarterback with the [Florida] Gator’s football team. When she was pregnant they found an issue and the doctor encouraged her to abort the baby. They said no, we will choose life. It has been an incredible platform for the Tebow family’s worldwide ministry.
