Everything still went according to plan on the two-part season finale of “Dancing with the Stars” Monday night on ABC, despite the 15-minute Special Report interruption. “We interrupt this program” occurred during the freestyle round, of all times for it to take place. That meant the following program “Castle” would also be delayed.
It turned out to be one of the most memorable finals in the show’s history. There was even a promo for “Dancing with the Stars” upcoming 10-year anniversary for the spring 2015. The first round consisted of each judge selecting a dance the couples could improve upon. The last and final round is the one fans have waited all season for. Sadie and Mark were to be up next, and that’s when there was breaking news about Ferguson, Missouri.
Judge’s Pick Round
It seems there were a lot of nerves surfacing for some couples who made some obvious mistakes. Bethany and Derek were up first. This is the first time they have gone first and it showed. In the opening sequence of their “Shake It Off” jive from week 1, Bethany is in her bedroom. The set was to be cleared off before starting their dance, yet furniture was still being moved.
Sadie and Mark definitely improved on their “Duck Dynasty” samba getting two 10’s and the second best score of this round. Hands down it was Alfonso and Witney bringing on with their first week jive, and scoring the only 40 in the judge’s round.
This is the round where everyone excelled with completely different routines. For starters all of the couple’s received a perfect score, something unprecedented. Bethany and Derek finished their futuristic freestyle, and were about to be interviewed, when the show was interrupted. The news announcer, George Stephanopoulos, stated “Dancing with the Stars” will be shown in its entirety.
Sadie Robertson and Mark Ballas went old school honoring the 1980s video game Mario Brothers and their salute to Super Mario. Mark was a perfect likeness to Mario, while Sadie was Princess Peach perfection. There were background dancers as Super Mushroom and his other game friends. The freestyle was set just like the platform video game. It was inventive, unique, and delightfully entertaining. This was an age-appropriate freestyle for Sadie, even if she isn’t aware of this game. Mark is a huge fan of the Mario Brothers and it clearly showed.
Val and Janel danced a full contemporary showcasing their journey on this show. It was absolutely breathtaking, even though Janel was in a lot of pain. The lft at the end had Val holding Janel up. There was a moment he looked like he may drop her, but held on. Finally, the couple everyone was waiting for. Alfonso and Witney also went old school with a tribute to his role on Broadway as “The Tap Dance Kid.” During their freestyle Alfonso did a tap solo, something not ever done during the finals in a freestyle dance.
Sadly one couple had to be eliminated. It was a difficult task for Tom and Erin, since all of their dances were exceptional. The couple leaving and will not be in the season finale were Bethany and Derek. The two-hour season finale concludes on Tuesday night with the crowning of a new champion.
