Until Dawn is a PS4 exclusive currently under development at Supermassive Games, but there is still much to learn about this upcoming survival horror game. One of the beauties of this game seems to be what can’t be known without a person having experienced the game for themselves.
Choice is often times an interesting mechanism for developers to use, and when it is implemented correctly it can yield some of the most unique gaming moments. Part of what makes these games so special is it gives players individual experiences that they can share with their friends, seeing what differed from one person’s playthrough versus another.
Until Dawn will be placing a heavy emphasis on choice. Supermassive Games seems to be making it a feature that’s applicable in more areas than just picking who lives and dies. In a recent post on the PS Blog, Supermassive Games’ Executive Producer Pete Samuels talked about the ways players will influence relationships in Until Dawn.
“Your actions not only determine who lives or dies, but will also directly influence the relationships between the characters (romantic or otherwise). You will even influence how characters react to each other. If you are mean to a friend, they may or may not choose to save you later in the game. The narrative will always continue forward, adapting to your decisions throughout the game – meaning that your game will be noticeably different from anyone else’s,” Samuels said.
Romance has been a part of games before and Dragon Age: Inquisition is one that comes to mind immediately. The types of relationships players could foster in that world was one of the elements that made the game special. Until Dawn seems to be making a similar choice, but to what extent will romances be illustrated and how much freedom will the player have in that regard?
Two characters in Until Dawn, Chris and Ashley, have a clear tension between the two, but Samuels reckons it’ll be something players explore at their own will, not at the game’s mandate. “One of our favorite things about this dynamic is that their relationship is not pre-defined at the beginning of the game; your choices will decide if the relationship either blossoms or wilts before the night is out,” Samuels said.
Sony’s most recent PS4 exclusive is The Order: 1886 and that will be available tomorrow. For those who are curious to know when Until Dawn will launch, that has not been made clear by Sony quite yet. Many assume the PS4 exclusive will launch in 2015, but with Bloodborne launching next month, it might be a while before we ultimately see Until Dawn.
