“Surviving Sam” stars Alicia Minshew in the title role of Samantha “Sam” Gallo. She is a familiar face for many, holding the role of Kendall Hart Slater on “All My Children” for several years. On Dec. 30, the Chicago TV Examiner was granted an email interview with Alicia Minshew to discuss her new role as Sam Gallo. From the sound of things, it looks like this will be a fun role for Minshew to play!
How a character is written is one of the most important things when handing scripts out for actors to read. When asked about why her “Surviving Sam” character appealed to her, Alicia Minshew said; “The character of Sam is such a fun character. It is always fun to play the bitch or the bad girl. I have a bit of practice doing that too! Sam is feisty, strong and very high maintenance. So those are fun things to play, but what I also like is this very vulnerable sweet side of her which comes out every now and then. Either alone with Ben or with her children.” Being able to relate to a character makes things a lot easier on the actor. When asked about whether or not Minshew could relate to Sam, she replied; “Oh, I hate to say it, but I can relate to Sam in some ways for sure. Not gonna lie, I can be totally high maintenance. Just ask my poor husband! So I can kind of tap into that side. I can also relate to her love for her children. As I have that deep love with my own child. Her selfish, bitchy side is not really me, which makes it that much more fun to play!”
Learning a bit about the character’s back story is important, but often doesn’t happen right away. When asked about a defining moment in Sam’s life that she could relate to, Alicia Minshew responded; “A defining moment? I think that would be when they got married. There is a very quick sweet wedding scene that sort of sets up the whole show. It shows that the love was there a long time ago and still is there in spite of the divorce. I am a child of divorced parents. And I know that the love can still be there after the divorce.” Minshew was asked for a little more information regarding her character Sam and she replied; “Sam is always used to getting what she wants. She will stop at nothing to make sure things go her way! She is prissy and high maintenance (like I mentioned) but believes she is entitled to be since she has to live with a nut job like Ben. However, she loves fiercely and likes sex a lot too! In spite of the divorce they still have this crazy sexual chemistry! I will leave it at that!” It appears that things may be heating up between Ben and Sam even though they are no longer together.
Working with a great cast is important for any show, and “Surviving Sam” is no different. When Alicia Minshew was asked about her favorite moment from filming, she said; “There were so many fun moments so far just from filming the first episode. I loved getting the whole cast together to film the opening of the show. We had to play a football game. Yup. Had a lot of laughs doing that! The kids were involved and that is always fun. But most of my scenes are with Rob Magnotti and he is just a dream to work with. We have a natural chemistry that makes every scene we do together so fun and easy. I loved doing our courtroom stuff, but I think my favorite was the hospital scene. Rob was adorable in that scene. We got to do some improv, which I always love doing! And improv is Rob’s forte. Just sit back and let him go. Our writers are very cool about letting us play like that!”
