It’s cool right? It makes you gain respect, right? It causes people to look up to you, correct? It shows that you are somebody…right? Clothes falling off; drink to your lips; drugs on your table; gun in your hands; money all over the place; middle finger up. What does this prove; what does it display; what is the message being sent? Does this picture make someone want to say, “Hello sir, May I help you?” Or does it make a store owner turn on the surveillance camera; put their hand on the phone; and put a lock on the cash register?
There are injustices in this nation for sure. There are also battles that we need to fight in other ways. While I am surely not opposed to the things that others are doing as it relates to their voice being heard, as long as it is civil: I am suggesting there is a need for us to address one of the problems that gets overlooked. There are young people out here, both black and white, who are sending a message that they have no integrity; no morals; no sense of life; no sense of accountability. There are a large group of people starting from preteen up to mid thirties that think life is a party and a game.
There is a message that GOD is sending, and it is in HIS WORD. Do we really think that GOD is pleased with this gangsta persona; this ungodly advertisement of life; this unholy billboard of America’s young? I think not! If HE is not pleased, then HE has no obligation to bless, or protect. We need to minister to those who have been shown some backward way of living; some irresponsible lifestyle of freestyle; laziness; drunken behavior. “Satan, who is the god of this world, has blinded the minds of those who don’t believe. They are unable to see the glorious light of the Good News. They don’t understand this message about the glory of Christ, who is the exact likeness of God.” (2 Corinthians 4:4 NLT)
T.H.U.G. LIFE (Traitors; Haters; Unholy;Godless), as described in 2 Timothy 3 ‘PERILOUS TIMES’.
The mindset of many of our youth and young adults is that of gangsta; thug; freestyle, living and dressing… and others will see them as they see themselves. Just as the first generation of Israelites saw themselves as grasshoppers in comparison to the giants in the Promised Land (and then they said ‘and so we are to them’). Because if they saw themselves as defeated grasshoppers, then surely the enemy would see them as such. If someone sees themselves as some cool street person, doing everything that a gangsta does, then that is how they are perceived, received and addressed. Then when they get locked up; their friends say “Free _________.” You fill in the blank.
First they need to be free in their mind. The main problem with the first generation of Israelites is that their mind was stuck in ‘backward mode.’ A mind has to be renewed, before some situations will ever change. So for those who want respect; first you must respect yourself enough to conduct yourself as GOD created you to be. For those who are ‘children of GOD’, we are instructed to ‘GO’ and preach the gospel. We can’t change someone’s mind about how they see others, when they see them exactly the way they are seeing themselves.
“ And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” (Romans 12:2)
