If you look into the games that are going to release in 2015, the slate is pretty empty at the moment. Considering the heavy fall and decent spring gaming had last year, 2015 is looking like it will pale in comparison. Sure, there are games that haven’t been announced, but it’s clear there are fewer and fewer games releasing these days.
Take-Two Interactive is one of the publishers that hasn’t announced a large amount of games for 2015. They have said Battleborn is coming soon, while there will be new iterations in the WWE 2K and NBA 2K franchises, but that’s it. Rockstar Games and 2K Games have both been quiet regarding what else is on the way.
In an interview with MCV, Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick talked about the upcoming slate of games coming from its developers. “Our track record shows that when we say we feel good about what is coming up, we actually mean it.
“I stand behind the belief that we are heading into another profitable year, and for this company to be able to say that… We have announced Battleborn, and we have our annual releases like WWE and NBA 2K but, outside of that, I’m feeling very good about the year we’re heading into. That’s all I can say at this point,” Zelnick said.
Battleborn is currently under development at Gearbox Software as it is their newest IP. Many have speculated what is coming from Rockstar Games, but we most likely won’t know what’s coming until they decide to make an actual announcement. As for 2K Games, they have a number of properties they are working on, and one would think they are going to announce another game or two before the summer is done.
The PlayStation 4 and Xbox One have collectively had a brilliant start to their life-cycles. Software will continue to play a huge role in how they perform over the years and Zelnick knows that. He spoke a bit about software coming to the PS4 and Xbox One. “If anything, there haven’t actually been that many releases, which is great for the people who put out high quality titles, not just ourselves,” Zelnick said.
It surely is a very positive thing for publishers when they release games that don’t have a lot of competition around them. Creating high-quality, AAA games is becoming more and more expensive, and because of that there is more risk involved. With this being the case, we could be seeing a future with less games being released and a higher priority being placed on them succeeding.
