Whether the kids are out of school for another day or you go out after school, here are some great places to take winter family photos in Lynchburg and the surrounding area. Even if you’ve taken photos in these locations, the scenery changes with the seasons.
The frozen dam and the tunnel at Hollins Mill Park are great locations for winter photos. Park your car at Hollins Mill Park, located at 1711 Hollins Mill Road. A short walk brings you to the Hollins Mill Tunnel. Be careful for ice along the way. You can also access the Blackwater Creek Bikeway and Point of Honor Trail from Hollins Mill Park.
Head to Percival’s Island for photos at The LOVEwork sculpture. Sponsored by Discover Lynchburg through an arts and culture grant by the City of Lynchburg, the LOVEwork sculpture is a favorite photo site for local families. Show your family love with photos at the LOVEwork sculpture or the red LOVE shoe, located just in downtown Lynchburg, just off Main Street beside the Craddock-Terry Hotel.
Follow the RiverWalk Trail at Percival’s Island and you’ll come to the bridge crossing from the island to Amherst County. The bridge offers great river views for family photos. You can also take photos of the family with the James River fountain in the background from the viewing deck at Percival’s.
Pose at the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Lynchburg’s “Be Great” mural while you’re in downtown Lynchburg. The mural is located on Madison Street at the corner of 12th Street.
Head down 5th Street and cross the James Lynch Memorial Bridge into Amherst County. Turn right as you come up the hill and head to Riveredge Park. The park is located just off Route 29 Business in Madison Heights at 150 Rocky Hill Road. You can see the James River fountain rising above the river. During the cold days of winter, the fountain’s water freezes the trees for a fun photo backdrop.
Lynchburg’s parks are perfect for family photos in any season. The bridge at Peaks View Park is a nice location with a background of trees and the flowing creek. Pose for fun winter photos on the playground or try a round of winter disc golf.
Riverside Park offers several locations for winter photos. Gather on the train at the Play Core playground. Head to the Overlook for a family photo with the mountains in the background. The gazebo is a beautiful backdrop for family photos. Walk down to the Riverside Park train exhibit and take photos of your little engineers.
Ivy Creek Park offers beautiful mountain views. The park is a winter wonderland right now so don’t wait. Gather on the fishing pier for photos with the lake in the background or pose on the nature playground for a fun photo shoot.
Once the snow melts, grab your bikes and hit the trail for family photos. The Blackwater Creek Bikeway is a great location for photos of your outdoor family enjoying a winter bike ride.
Gather the family at the top of Monument Terrace for a great photo overlooking the city. Pose in front of the Doughboy statue at Monument Terrace, at Lynchburg Museum or Point of Honor for historic family photos.
Find a frozen lake, pond, creek or waterfall. Crabtree Falls is a about an hour’s drive north of Lynchburg. Lakeland Lake is located off Leesville Road. Blackwater Creek runs beside the Blackwater Creek trails through Lynchburg.
The snow on the ground makes this the perfect time to pose for winter photos in front of your church or your child’s school to tell the story of your all-season family. If you’d rather, let the kids gather at home with your snowman or on the family’s sled at your favorite sledding hill. You’ll capture the flavor of winter with snow on the ground and everyone bundled up. Pose with mugs of hot cocoa for a fun photo.
Take family photos with distant mountains in the background from the top of Candlers Mountain. Park at Snowflex and walk or drive up the gravel road to the LU Monogram. The views are breathtaking in any season. Spend a few hours snow tubing, skiing or snowboarding at Snowflex for more great photos.
The Awareness Garden at the Blackwater Creek Bikeway entrance on Langhorne Road and the Anne Spencer garden on Pierce Street are two favorite Central Virginia Public Gardens. Both are wonderful locations for family photos, offering beauty in any season.
Old City Cemetery offers a beautiful setting for family photos. The butterfly garden and lotus pond are especially beautiful with snow on the ground. The old-fashioned swing near the chapel is also a favorite place for fun family photos.
Choose a fun backdrop for your winter photos. Gather in front of Amazement Square, the mural at the Academy of Fine Arts, the CityArts mosaic across from Amazement Square or the mural in front of the Academy of Music. All are colorful so wear solid colors.
The Peaks of Otter Lodge offers beautiful scenery during any season. Sharp Top Mountain can be seen from in front of the lake. Families often pose on the bridge at the Peaks too. If you’re feeling adventurous, take a hike to the top of Sharp Top Mountain for winter outdoor photos. Be sure to dress for the weather and bring hiking poles. There is beauty in every turn in the Blue Ridge Mountains.
The Blue Ridge Parkway closes for weather during winter, but you may find a section or two open. Pick any overlook along the Blue Ridge Parkway and pose with the beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains as your backdrop. If your family loves the outdoors, hit one of the many hiking trails alongside the Parkway for back to nature wintry photos.
