Mother’s Day is coming up fast, so it’s time to make plans for your Mom’s special day on Sunday, May 10. To treat Mom, Tamarind of London, the upscale Indian restaurant in Newport Beach that was chosen by The Los Angeles Times’ Pulitzer Prize-awarded restaurant critic Jonathan Gold as “Best Indian Food” in Southern California is putting together a special Mother’s Day Menu. Tamarind of London is known for using local, seasonal California produce and sustainable ingredients in every dish.
Chef Imran Ali, Executive Chef at Tamarind of London, brings a strong Indian background to every dish while bringing contemporary plating and creative flair to the dishes. In addition, Pastry Chef Mark Madina brings his expertise not only to creative desserts but also to dishes like the Vegetable Biranyi, a delicious rice and vegetable dish covered with a pastry shell and served tableside. The Vegetable Biranyi will be one of the main courses available on the Chef’s specially planned menu.
In a sneak preview of the dishes available for Mother’s Day, Chef Ali showcased both traditional and new, creative dishes for the special day. Each guest will be able to choose an appetizer. A plate consisting of a Grilled Potato Cake with Cumin and Ginger and a Spiced Potato Croquette was beautifully plated with a Smoked Tomato Chutney. For lamb lovers, a Skewered Lamb Seekh Kebab is an excellent choice to start the meal.Another appetizer choice is Charbroiled Swordfish with Ajwain and a Mace Marinade. The Ajwain, a relatively unknown annual herb from India, shows Chef Ali’s skill at choosing different herbs and spices with subtle flavors. Indeed, part of the reason Tamarind of London’s food is so accessible is that he uses a wide palette of flavors from over 50 herbs and spices rather than the five spices and overpowering chilis that are common in average Indian restaurants.
For the main dishes on Mother’s Day, besides the aforementioned Vegetable Biranyi, the classic Chicken Tikka Masala makes an appearance. Tender chunks of tandoor grilled chicken are bathed in a delicious Makhni Sauce that contains sauteed sliced onions. This dish was certainly a prime example of why this dish is popular the world over and Tamarind of London’s version is sublime. The Chicken Tikka Masala was not too spicy but was loaded with tons of flavor.
Even though India has tons of coastline, fish and seafood dishes are generally not thought of as Indian. With a deft hand, however, Chef Ali has included a delicious Coconut Prawn Curry on the Mother’s Day Menu. This curry was extremely tasty and a must-have for seafood lovers with the jumbo prawns cooked to a juicy perfection swimming in a tasty ginger and coconut milk sauce. Along with the main dishes, a sumptuous dish of Smoked Eggplant and one of Black Lentils are served as well as a choice of tandoori bread or rice.
Chef Ali has also created some additional dishes which can be added to the meal for $5 each. A refreshing Quinoa Salad and a Tandoori Lamb Seekh Kebab Salad are two of the choices. Showcasing his creativity, the Chef has also created a dish of Fried Prawns for Mother’s Day. This dish, with the prawns crusted in a fine vermicelli that makes it look like a miniature bird’s nest is then topped with a dollop of sauce to complete the illusion. The dish isn’t just beautiful, though, it is also delicious.
Chef Mark again shows his excellent touch with a special dessert for Mother’s Day. He has created a Chocolate Molten Cake and is serving it with a home made Caramelized Milk Ice Cream. This dessert was absolutely delicious and guaranteed to put a smile on the face of your Mother (or your children’s Mother too!). A full bar is also available with such delights as the signature Tamarind of London Martini. Combined with Tamarind of London’s location on Pacific Coast, this would make a great day to take Mom for a drive on PCH or even a walk on the beach at nearby Crystal Cove State Park.
The Mother’s Day meal is $45.00 per person, with all dishes exclusive to the Mother’s Day Menu. Diner have a choice of enjoying the meal in the beautiful outdoor patio with firepits, the spacious dining room or the expansive bar area. On Mother’s Day, Tamarind of London will be open from 11:30am until 2:30pm for lunch and then from 5:00 until 10:30pm for dinner.
