A teen posed as a doctor for the duration of at least four weeks, fooling patients and medical staff alike. However, the young man’s mom says her son suffers from mental illness, and because of this (and the fact no patients were harmed during his spree as an imposter), there will likely be no charges filed in the case. The Spreadit News reports this Saturday, Jan. 17, 2015, that West Palm Beach officials are still investigating this unbelievable scenario that occurred at St. Mary’s Medical Center.
With a lab coat, pretend name, and apparently professional look in hand, this must have been one young, convincing-looking physician. Nonetheless, for a 17-year-old man to not only pose as a doctor, but maintain his charade for a full month has people across the country scratching their heads. The young man, who is not being identified publicly, apparently wore a lab coat and walked through hospital halls at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Florida. He was eventually caught impersonating an OB/GYN.
His condition has not been shared with the public; however, the teen has been confirmed to be “mentally ill,” adds Travelers Today News. Police officials are still looking into the case and examining the 17-year-old and his mom, including why he was not taking his medication. At the time he was discovered, the man was said to be inside of an exam room near a patient. Yet this faux “doctor” had no credentials, license, or experience to be doing anything of the sort.
That particularly observant patient was said to be a driving force behind the teen posing as a doctor being discovered. She said that something seemed off with the person near her room — he looked far too young and had been walking aimlessly through the halls. She added that the teen had a St. Mary’s professional lab coat with the word, “Anesthesiology” on the front. The young man claimed his name was Dr. Robinson, and had apparently been unnoticed previously in the hospital because he often had a face mask on. The 17-year-old’s convincing garb even included a stethoscope.
While they thought nothing suspicious of it at the time, many began to realize they had seen the young man. A security guard soon came forward to talk with police as well about the teen acting as an imposter physician. He claimed that he had seen the individual for a few weeks now, and that the 17-year-old was telling people he had been accomplished in medicine for a number of years. Staff members also noted they had seen the teen working as an OB/GYN passing through the offices and halls on more than one occasion.
One such leading member from St. Mary’s Medical Center, Dr. Sebastian Kent, said he had met the mystery teen posing as a doctor. He believed him to simply be a genius that had been accepted into the medical profession early. “The first thing I thought was I am getting, I am really getting old because these young doctors look younger every year,” he said. Police officials have since offered a statement on the unbelievable incident:
“The individual never had contact with any hospital patients and did not gain access to any patient care areas of the hospital at any time. The hospital immediately notified local authorities, who took the individual into custody, and we are cooperating with their ongoing investigation.”
With this medical act surrounding an imposter in a lab coat solved, the 17-year-old man is stated to be safe and secure once again in his mom’s care. The teen has not been allowed to return to the hospital after his doctor impersonation stunt. Due to him not disrupting any patients’ safety or lives, he is not being charged with any crime, nor has he been arrested. Next time, however, security staff may need to be a bit more on vigilant before letting this or any other “Dr. Robinson” figures walk the halls again.
