Tenderly the Rosemary Clooney Musical opened on November 20 at the Shelterhouse in The Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park and will continue there through January 4, 2015. Opening night was filled with excitement as theatre goers got to learn more about this prominent Cincinnati entertainer and her family. Rosemary’s brother Nick Clooney a celebrity in his own right was in attendance and that made that night evermore special, heartfelt, and warm.
Tenderly is an incredible and introspective look into the life story of Rosemary Clooney the trials, heartbreaks, and successes. This story unfolds in conversations that Rosemary has with her therapist. The journey starts with divorce of her parents Marie Frances and Andrew Joseph Clooney. The family breakup results with Rosemary and Betty growing up Maysville with their father, and her brother and mom moving to California. Fortune spins her way with her and Betty winning a radio spot on radio station WLW, and later her own with first musical success the song “Come On-A My House.” Tragedies in her life are explored with Rosemary’s two failed marriages to Jose Ferrer, a nervous breakdown, drug addiction and stress to remain relevant in a music industry. Rosemary’s happier moments of her life are covered with a marriage to friend and dancer Dante Dipaolo, also the warm and tender friendship she had with Bing Crosby and movie; they did together White Christmas. Additionally, this onstage production looks at Rosemary reinventing her career to become a highly successful jazz singer.
Susan Haefner as Rosemary Clooney radiated the full range of emotions, feelings and splendor of this talented entertainment legend and capturing her true essence.
Michael Marotta surpassed excellence performing brilliantly not only as The Doctor, but all the significant men in her life as well as her sister Betty.
