Terrapin Beer Co. (Athens, Georgia) recently announced that Hop Selection Double IPA, a single hop brew, will be joining their Monster Beer Tour series in March.
Each and every year, Terrapin brewmaster Brian “Spike” Buckowski takes a fall trip to Yakima Valley, Washington to assess the year’s hop harvest. While securing the brewery’s usual hop order, Spike is also given the opportunity to get familiar with “up-and-coming stars or as-yet-unnamed experimental varieties” of hops. Obviously, interacting with these new hops is inspirational and really gets the creative juices flowing for a brewer. This yearly dose of inspiration will now find its way to your glass with the release of Terrapin’s newest Monster Beer Tour offering, Hop Selection Double IPA.
Hop Selection Double IPA will be a limited, single hop offering that changes yearly to feature Spike’s favorite hop of the season. The chosen hop could be “an old classic, a new variety, or an experimental standout”, but rest assured that the final beer will showcase that hop’s unique characteristics. For the first installment, this year’s Hop Selection will use Ella hops. For the lowdown on these hops, here’s the description from brewery’s press release:
Ella, the hop used in the inaugural edition of Hop Selection is an Australian hop; Terrapin will be using Ella hops from the 2014 harvest. Ella (previously called Stella), the descendent of a Spalt-derived male and half-sister to Galaxy, is considered an aroma hop though with her higher alpha acid content of 14 – 16% she can also lend a hand in bittering. Ella has an interesting aroma of spicy hoppiness backed with softer floral notes and a touch of anise, which is a contrast to the big citrus/tropical fruit and pine notes of many modern hops used in American craft beers.
Hop Selection Double IPA will be available for a limited time beginning in early March. You will be able to find it on draft and in four-packs of 12 oz. bottles throughout Terrapin’s distribution footprint.
A little bad news does accompany the good news of this latest release from Terrapin. To make room for Hop Selection Double IPA on the brewing schedule and in the Monster Beer Tour series, Hopzilla Double IPA has been put on an indefinite hiatus. Don’t mourn the passing of Hopzilla for too long because Hop Selection is now going to give us all something new to look forward to each year. Prost!
