Thanksgiving is a time that reminds us to be grateful for the blessings in our life. Of course, it would be best to give thanks for all the abundance in our life every day of the year, not just on Thanksgiving. And that is what I especially like about a book that is focused on beginning every meal with an open heart. The book is The Grateful Table: Blessings, Prayers and Graces for the Daily Meal by Brenda Knight (Viva Editions, 2013).
I’m fond of this book because it gives us something to be thankful for every day of the year, not just on Thanksgiving…and not only to begin a meal but also to begin a lifetime of gratitude.
To help you get started on your gratitude journey, below are ten of my favorite thoughts on that subject from The Grateful Table. Use them as affirmations throughout your day or as a blessing before your meal. It really doesn’t matter how you use them. What matters is that you use them.
“Happiness cannot be traveled to, owned, earned, worn or consumed. Happiness is a spiritual experience of living every minute with love, grace and gratitude.”

“What if you gave someone a gift, and they neglected to thank you for it—Would you be likely to give them another? Life is the same way. In order to attract more of the blessings that life has to offer, you must truly appreciate what you already have.”
– Ralph Marston
“When life’s problems seem overwhelming, look around and see what other people are coping with. You may consider yourself fortunate.”
– Ann Landers
“Both in good fiction and in life, you may not always get what you want, but you will probably get what you need. We should be grateful for these things.”
– Neil Gaiman
“The hardest arithmetic to master is that which enables us to count our blessings.”

-William A. Ward
“If the only prayer you say in your whole life is ‘Thank you,’ that would suffice.”
