Are you seeking to be your Higher Self and experience deeper meaning and purpose in your life? There are 5 pillars to living a spiritual, meaningful life. Here are some helpful guidelines, explanations and affirmations to assist you in the process so that you can shine your light upon the world you see on a daily basis.
Pillar #1: Self-worth
A key component to living a spiritual life on earth is to recognize what you and your brothers and sisters really are: a reflection of the Divine itself – the Child of Love. Thinking of yourself as one with the “Great I Am,” heals the illusion of separation and limitation, and allows you to operate in the world from a place of higher consciousness and love.
You cannot give what you do not have. If you don’t feel worthy of peace yourself, it will be hard – if not impossible – to truly see others as worthy of peace. This withholding of self-love and acceptance is what causes us to withhold it from others.
Guidelines for this pillar: Constantly affirm your own self-worth by reminding yourself of the truth of who you are, and be willing to see the worthiness in others as well.
Practice forgiving yourself for all of your past mistakes, shortcomings, failures and even grievances you have held against others. The more you offer yourself forgiveness, the more easily you will be able to forgive others.
Daily affirmation to strengthen the power of this pillar in your life: “I am one with my Creator and all of creation, and I matter in the Divine Plan. I honor, accept and love myself, and I deserve peace.”
Pillar #2: Love
A Course in Miracles states that there are only 2 states from which we create in the world: love or fear. Love, being of the spirit is eternal and all-powerful and it unites us as One Presence. Fear is ego-generated and stems from the illusion that we are separate, limited and that we must attack others to get what we need and constantly defend ourselves against attack from others. The worst acts of human nature and acts of violence stem from fear.
The spiritually mature person understands that love is the only choice and the only real possibility. They are willing to see love in everyone, even behind the ugliness that appears to be staring them in the face.
We commit to a life of non-violence and are advocates for peace when we honor this pillar because we remember that we only hurt ourselves when we disrespect life in any of its various forms.
Guideline for this pillar: Notice how often you are operating from fear and judgment rather than from love. Whenever you catch yourself judging another person in a negative way, simply turn that thought over to your Higher Mind and ask to be shown the light in that person instead of the darkness. Ask to be shown the truth and light within your own being as well.
Daily affirmation to strengthen the power of this pillar in your life: “I am deeply cherished by the Divine, and I look upon the world with the eyes of Love, extending compassion to all I see.”
Pillar #3: Gratitude & Reverence
Gratitude is the highest form of prayer and is the key component to manifestation. Reverence allows us to see the sacred in all forms and to embrace the higher wisdom that is available to us through our life experiences – both good and bad. Gratitude and reverence allows us to operate from a place of peaceful acceptance of what exists now, and joyful anticipation of what is to come.
Furthermore, gratitude shifts our focus to the natural abundance of the Universe and proves that the more we have, the more we have to give!
Guidelines for this pillar: Be willing to start and end your day by listing 3 things for which you are grateful. Allow yourself to really feel the gratitude in your body as you meditate on each item on your list, rather than just listing things mentally. Include challenges that you have overcome from the past that helped you grow into the person you are today so that you can see how grateful you can be for “unanswered prayers” and the trials that revealed your inner strength.
Commit to being present and observe the way Spirit operates in your life in a powerful, yet unseen way. Jot down in a journal how you noticed the Divine working in your life today – no matter how small or mundane it might seem.
Daily affirmation to strengthen the power of this pillar in your life: “I am present to the sacred operation of the Divine in my life, and I am deeply grateful for all that is and all that is to come.”
Pillar #4: Truth
There is a wonderful passage in the beginning of A Course in Miracles: “Nothing real can be threatened. Nothing unreal exists. Herein lies the peace of God.”
When we hold the idea of a higher truth in our life, it can dispel the negativity that we see around us. Remember, we are at choice as to whether we respond from a place of love or fear when reacting to the world around us.
Practicing the idea that there is only Love and that our Higher Power can heal our minds for us so that we can look upon a world that reflects this love can allow us to live by truth rather than illusion. The truth in our mind can be that there is only one of us – that we are one in Divine Consciousness and that peace is our Divine birthright.
Another aspect of living from truth in our daily lives is to remove ourselves from our mental stories and the drama of those around us as often as possible. By releasing the past and allowing ourselves to be totally in the present moment without judgment, we remove the internal noise that blocks us from the beauty of the now. Being present allows us to simply be with life, rather than perpetuating a story about who we think we are.
Guidelines for this pillar:
Imagine what your life would look like from a “the glass if full and overflowing” perspective. If you are currently looking at “a less than full glass” situation, then you can offer this perception to your Higher Power for healing so that you can step into what is yours by Divine Right – an overflowing, full glass!
Try an affirmative prayer such as this to restore your mind to the Truth: Divine Love, I am experiencing fear, lack and limitation and I am willing to know that this is not the truth. It is hard for me to believe that I am looking at an illusion, because it all seems very real to me. Thank you in advance for giving me True Vision and the strength to see beyond what my senses are showing me so that I can stand powerfully in the abundance, health, radiance and safety of Your Love. I am willing to know that only Love is true and only the truth is true. I choose to remember that Your Will for me is that I be happy. Thank you in advance that we are all safe, loved and provided for in all respects.
You may not really believe the above statements to be true yet, and that is perfectly fine. All that is required of you at this time is your willingness to see fearful situations as illusions so that you can begin to co-create from a place of love and fearlessness. A peaceful mind creates peaceful experiences.
Daily affirmation to strengthen the power of this pillar in your life: “Love creates like itself. There is only Love. What Love did not create does not exist and can have no real effects. I am eternally free and safe.”
Pillar #5: Service
Being of service to others is being Love in action. It is the outward expression of our inner gifts. Being of service doesn’t mean that you need to give away all your material possessions and move to a third world country to volunteer in a shelter – although it can mean that if that’s what excites you!
Being of service can be as simple as helping a stranger whose car has broken down on the side of the road by calling AAA for them and keeping them company while they wait. It can be smiling at someone who seems sad. It can be in the form of tithing to a person, organization, or group. It may be volunteering once a week at your local community center, homeless shelter, or church. We are all called to service in different ways, and they are all good.
Guidelines for this pillar:
Make a list of all of your strengths, talents, values and areas of interest. This allows you to see what qualities and skills you are aware that you possess so that you can value all that you have to give.
Take a few moments to be quiet and still. Breathe deeply and ask your Higher Power to show you what would be the most joyful way for you to be of service to others. Ask for clear guidance on how to proceed and that you be led to those who need you most.
Daily affirmation to strengthen the power of this pillar in your life: “I have gifts to share with the world and I happily share them in a peaceful way.”
As you begin to align with these 5 pillars throughout your daily life, you will feel more connected to Spirit, more peaceful in yourself and with others, more aware of your unity with all of life and deeply appreciative of creation in all of its forms. Keep in mind that it’s not mandatory that you are living each pillar perfectly. Practice developing each one at your own pace and remember – that’s why it’s called a “spiritual practice.”
