Many energy and utility companies these days bundle several services that households utilize. These companies realize that they can provide all these services at a discount because of economies of scale.
For such utility companies, it will not be too much of a stress in the resources to provide electricity as well as a broadband connection to the same household. These savings are then translated to consumers who bundle the services and consolidate their bills.
Sometimes, consumers are not aware of how they can take advantage of such bundled services and may become displeased by the service. For example, complaints can be due to customers not taking full advantage of the bundles they offer, and actually pay for a single service instead of a bundle or double pay for a similar service with a different company.
If you are having a hard time paying your bills and want to take more control of your energy and utility bills, here are some projects that you can embark on.
Lighting and appliances
If you are indoors, make as much use of natural light from the sun as possible by opening curtains and avoid using light bulbs. You can also make more use of rooms that have more light during the day in order to avoid using too much energy in lighting.
If you can, some construction work can be a great project to embark on. Make larger windows or open up walls that increase the amount of light that comes into your house. This is especially possible if you are going to construct a new home and want to take into account energy saving measures.
While you are at it, insulate your home and change fixtures and appliances to more energy efficient ones.
You can make these changes a slow but deliberate effort, on a month to month basis, in order to avoid impact on your finances. For example, on your first month, buy some energy saving bulbs for two rooms you use most in your home. Then on the second month, target the other rooms in your house such as the bathrooms.
Self-sufficient energy sources
The most obvious way to save on energy in the home is to become totally self-sufficient. This is becoming more and more common as energy saving companies and renewable energy companies keep reducing the cost of implementing such projects.
Depending on where you live, you can install a solar or wind system or even a combination of the two in order to take care of your energy needs.
In fact, in some places, it is possible to sell energy to utility companies and make money from them. Who knows, if you implement the renewable energy system well, soon, you could become a micro utility company by providing electricity to your neighbors as well.
There are several other projects that you could embark on in order to save energy in your home. Some of the projects don’t have to involve cash and can be as simple as a shift in mentality and behavior. For example, unplugging devices that consume standby power from the wall.
