While measles have been the disease the mainstream press has covered for the past few weeks there is another bug that is going around – unlike the measles this one is having a positive impact on the Southern California comic book market. The Comic Bug has spread from patient zero, aka their Manhattan Beach store, and moved their presence to their second shop in Culver City. And on May 2, 2015 the comic bug will be taking over the Culver City Teen Center for Free Comic-Con Day.
Announced on The Comic Bug Facebook events page on February 23, 2015, on the same day the entire nation will be celebrating Free Comic Book Day the fine folks at the Comic Bug will be taking the event to an all-new level. At the Culver City Teen Center on the first Saturday in May you will receive the comic book convention experience for free with Free Comic-Con Day.
Like all comic book conventions there will be artists and writers from every major comic book publisher. Over 40 creators are confirmed at this point and more are expected to be added in the months leading to the event. And just like the expensive conventions, this free comic-con will have cosplayers, podcasts, and contests.
Artists and writers are welcome to join in and in keeping with the theme of the event they are being asked to offer one item for free. Whether it is sketches, comics, or posters everyone in attendance will walk away with a lot of swag. Creators interested in being a part of the day should reach out to The Comic Bug now.
One of the highlights of the event will be the opportunity to get your hands on the Free Comic-Con Day exclusive “Edge of Spider-Verse” #2 which features the debut of Spider-Gwen one of the most surprising and outstanding characters to invade the comic market in the last decade. This comic will come with a variant cover by “Lola XOXO” creator Siya Oum, who will be in attendance, and be available for $10. Robbi Rodriguez the interior artist for “Edge of the Spider-Verse” #2 and the designer of Spider-Gwen’s costume will also be on hand to sign copies of this exclusive cover.
Why did the Comic Bug choose “Edge of Spider-Verse” #2 as their exclusive comic for Free Comic-Con Day? Co-Owner of The Comic Bug Mike Wellman had this to say to BleedingCool.com:
“Edge Of Spider-Verse” #2, like “Action Comics” #1, “Showcase” #4, “Giant-Size X-Men” #1 and “Dark Knight Returns” #1 before it, marks the beginning of a bold, new era of comics. An era where diversity isn’t just represented because it’s politically correct, it’s here because it’s now, after so many years, being celebrated! Embraced! Devoured!
Free Comic-Con Day is in addition to the traditional Free Comic Book Day events that will be taking place at their Manhattan Beach and Culver City stores, so you will have three chances and places to catch the bug. Be sure to login to The Comic Bug’s Facebook page and RSVP to the event to get the latest news and the full list of all the artists who will be a aprt of this event.
