The Hunger Games Mockingjay Part 1 already opened today and boxoffice predictions are so high that the movie is expected to earn $150 million dollars for Lionsgate during the opening weekend. According to Businessweek, the film has no competition from other films because all of the studios knew the movie was going to blow away the competition. “When a film comes into the marketplace and faces zero competition, there’s always a reason for that,” said Jeff Bock, an analyst at Exhibitor Relations. “It’s going to put up box-office numbers that tracking services can’t even predict.” There are predictions that the movie will dominate the boxoffice for at least the next few weeks during the holiday season.
Jennifer Lawrence attended the premiere of “The Hunger Games Mockingjay Part 1” with her cast members at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles on Monday (Nov. 17). The movie is the third installment in the popular series based on the NY Times bestsellers based on Suzanne Collins’ YA novels. The Oscar winning actress wore a silver Dior couture gown with a tea length hemline on the white carpet. Jennifer Lawrence also donned a Dior gown to the world premiere in London on Nov. 10.
Here are red carpet interviews with the cast and singer Lorde who contributed to the soundtrack at the L.A. and London premieres. The third film in the movie franchise has a darker tone than the first two films despite the fact that the Hunger Games have ended.
Jennifer Lawrence “Katniss Everdeen“- I saw the film and I really love it. The movie is absolutely amazing. It surpassed any expectation I could have had. We’re just following Katniss’ journey as the war is starting between District 13 and the Capitol. There’s no more games she just kind of wakes up in a District that she didn’t even know existed. She has to kind of piece herself back together.
Liam Hemsworth”Gale Hawthorne” – Fans are so passionate about these movies and these books. And these characters. It’s very exciting to come and meet them firsthand. He’s a passionate guy. It’s the first time in these stories where you kind of get to see a little bit of his effected side I guess. He’s pretty good at putting on a strong face. Not letting Katniss see how he really feels about things. There’s a moment in this one where you see. He talks about his district being destroyed and you see his vulnerability and the fact that he is not just a tough unbreakable guy. He’s human just like everyone else. It’s just another evolution of the story. The characters go in a different direction. This film is a much different than the first two. It’s a different part of the story. We’re not in the Hunger Games anymore. We don’t have the games. It’s more about the uprising and the rebellion. Spreading the word and getting the districts to come together and be a part of it all.
Josh Hutcherson”Peeta Mellark” – For me I think it’s about a couple of things. I think that the character of Katniss that Suzanne created is one that young people across the world have really connected with and she’s real. And she doesn’t know what to do but she finds her way and tries to be as strong as she can. I think what is interesting about Peta is that his whole thing for the first two movies especially is was that he doesn’t want to become a piece in the game. He wants to maintain his own point of view and his own belief. But he is held captive and tortured in this one so he is forced to change. I think that is a really interesting thing for a character to go through.
Willow Shields “Primrose Everdeen”- I think Katniss has grown a lot, but I think Prim has grown a lot in these past three films. She starts as this innocent girl and then she becomes this strong independent person and you see her taking care of Katniss in Mockingjay which you never saw before. It’s so different. So I loved that it may be subtle to some people seeing her strength. She has a very subtle quiet strength but it’s there. And I loved playing that.
Natalie Dormer “Cressida”- It was so great to join the family. I love her because she does what you’re doing right now. And it was really liberating and fun for me. To play someone on the other side of the camera. Her look is badass. I love the way she looks. She’s a woman who is focused. It’s all about getting the shot. She wants to overthrow Snow and she’s there to support Katniss and get her through it. I think too often we talk down to our audience. And especially to our young audience. These movies refuse to do that and that’s why they work.
Elizabeth Banks “Effie Trinkett”– I love Katniss Everdeen. I love her. I think she is an amazing heroine. My heart’s been with her since the very first book. So I just love that we’re continuing the story. That the stakes are higher this time. And I’m really excited for the fans to see it. We get to make a very entertaining more here but it has a lot of substance. And that is just a real pleasure to work on something that you know can actually make a difference in people’s lives. Inspire young people. That’s what is so much fun about these movies.
Julianne Moore – “President Coin” – This is an extraordinary group of people. This a really wonderful exciting talented cast. I think the thing that was so extraordinary about them was how incredibly kind, generous and inclusive they were. Jen, Liam and Josh have set a tone with these films. It’s great to be part of films that are important to popular culture. And movies that are important to young people. It’s exciting you make movies because you want people to see them. These stories really resonate with many people so it’s very exciting.
