Sister Julie Vieira, IHM and Sr. Maxine Kollasch, IHM, members of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary of Monroe, Michigan “believe everyone is called by God to a vocation that enriches the person & the world. Our mission is to help people discover & grow in their vocation.” They had a vision of a different kind of ministry from the ones that Sisters and Nuns usually do. They decided to use their mutual love of writing and communication to bring the presence of Roman Catholic Sisters to the internet with an online ministry and create a community.
They began their ministry in 2006 with Sr. Julie writing a blog entitled, A Nun’s Life. Her topics included writing about life as a Sister, answering questions about the Catholic faith and responding to queries from people wanting to know more about vocations to the religious life. Her readers were given the opportunity to learn more about Catholic Sisters than just what they saw in movies.
October 23, 2009, A Nun’s Life Ministry aired its first podcast, Ask Sister, and since then there have been 163 podcasts. The Ask Sister series has included Motherhouse Road trips to visit various Roman Catholic Religious Congregation, talks with guests as well as Sisters Julie and Maxine responding to various questions. All are welcome to view the podcasts and take part in the discussions via the chat room.
The In Good Faith podcasts began September 10, 2010. There have been thirty-two podcasts. Guests have included Sister Elisabeth Johnson CSJ, Sister Bernie Lynch, MM, Noelle Garcia, a Christian singer and songwriter, Father James Matin, SJ, Brother Mickey Mcgrath, OSFS and Dr. Bren Ortega Murphy. As the title would suggests, the role of faith in one’s life is the basis of the discussion. All are welcome to view the podcasts and take part in the discussions via the chat room.
The Sisters created Random Nun Clips to provide a sampling of various topics discussed in both Ask Sister and In Good Faith. The clips range from forty seconds to seventeen minutes and always include information about the original podcast.
The Sisters also have Praying With The Sisters podcast every Monday at 5 P.M. EST. All are welcome to join the Sisters in prayer and spend time talking after prayer in the chart room. There are First Friday Chats at 9 P.M. EST on the first Friday of each month as well as a Discernment chat for those looking into religious vocations. The discernment chats are once a month usually on the third Thursday. The chats are discussion only, not live podcasts. All are welcome to take part in the discussions via the chat room.
Sister Julie still writes a weekly blog and people can Follow A Nun’s Life Ministry on Twiiter, like their page on Facebook and watch them on YouTube. They have created a wonderful, welcoming community that continues to grow. Visit their web site, spend some time praying with them and listen to their podcasts.
