In anticipation of The Last Bison’s new EP being released next month, listen to the single “This Changes Everything” and check out tour dates for this spring.
Following several full-length and EP album releases since 2011, indie group The Last Bison’s new EP titled Dorado slightly veers into a new direction without altering too much of the sweeping chamber and folk rock sound. Dorado, the title of which derives from a constellation of the same name, will be self-released on March 3. The Last Bison previously released albums through Universal.
The four-song EP still brings along the sounds expressed on last year’s full-length album VA, but cuts down on the dramatic dynamics. It is a quieter affair, but actually incorporates more instrumentation. Focusing more on rhythms and vocals, the softly interwoven male and female vocal harmonies work well together as an additional instrument rather than a distraction.
Though not exclusively folk, there’s definitely moments of it creeping up as banjo and acoustic guitars permeate the four-song album. Think of a more folk version of Ra Ra Riot. Opening track “Souls in the Sand” adds in a twinkling of xylophones. The second track and single “This Changes Everything,” which is now available to stream on Soundcloud, has a perkier beat and is closest to the sound found on VA.
In addition to banjo, swirls of violin also add a classic American element. Both of the last two songs demonstrate a softer side. “Dorado” utilizes a differing vocal style reminiscent of Bob Dylan, while closing ballad “You are the Only One” has a beautiful stripped down acoustic approach.
To promote the new EP, The Last Bison will be touring around the U.S. starting in the middle of March. Check out all of the U.S. tour dates below.
