Local band, The Maine, is using the newest thing in Social Media to help promote the launch of their new album American Candy. The media platform they are using is called Meerkat. Meerkat allows followers to live stream video being taken in real time.
In this instance, The Maine has been live for nearly twenty hours. Followers download the Meerkat app and then search for whomever they would like to follow. Once you are following, you will be sent notifications of Meerkats on your Twitter feed and can watch and participate live.
The Maine started their 24 hour event at 9pm MST last night. Once up and filming( and sharing) they headed to NBC 12 News Studios for a live interview on air. The band members explained to Anchor, Tram Mai, how to use Meerkat and how it is helping them to promote the release of their new album and tour American Candy.
Fast forward nearly twenty hours and the band is still going live. They have traveled all over the Valley. They have made appearances, eaten, played basketball among other activities, all live for their fans to experience right along with them.
Meerkat is expected to generate followers which translates in to sales. There are other platforms that are similar. Periscope is one being used highly by News Media experts. It basically does the same thing, allowing followers to watch video being taken in real time. Many consider Periscope to be a more professional version of this platform.
Needless to say, this new wave of technology is catching on. The Maine has thousands of fans following them all over the Phoenix area, many of whom stayed up all night to help the band celebrate the release of their new album. These followers come from as far away as Australia and Peru. This local band is one to keep an eye on as they “Pioneer” their way across the media stratosphere.
