New Nashville was full force last night as Lovenoise delivered a great present with the Robert Glasper Experiment performing at Marathon Works. The opening act was a local talent Jason Eskridge who left us with a great musical imprint on the stage. He was super talented singing and playing instruments. After his performance he was even humble in taking the time to meet his fans and sign autographs.
Before the main headliners hit the stage, I scanned the audience and noticed it was a great melting pot with different cultures and demographics attending the show. Clearly, Lovenoise was smart with their marketing and selecting a perfect venue in Marathon Works. There were plenty of couples, groups of friends and entertainment industry experts in the building.
As the show opened Houston native,Grammy award winning pianist/producer Robert Glasper, took the time to speak and interact with his fans. He joked about receiving a tweet from a consistent fan that had a special request for a song and revealed to the audience he loved to talk.
The Robert Glasper Experiment was a breathe of perfect spring fresh air. As I closed my eyes I could feel the magic in his keys and goosebumps rise on my arms. Casey Benjamin the vocoder and saxophonist was an eye-catcher with his style and perfect hairstyle which reminded me of a young George Clinton with his red color at the top of his hairstyle. Derrick Hodge the bass player had some serious skills and he always had this stern natural disposition about him as he rocked out and of course Mark Colenburg made love with the drums and the crowd mesmerized with his rapid precision with his drumsticks.
After attending the show: perfectionist, showmanship, and love resonate in my mind. We all walked away with a special treat with a live jazz, hip-hop and edgy band experience marked in our heads. (My favorite part of the show would have to be when they covered Janet Jackson’s “Anytime, Anyplace.” Watch it in the video section.) They mixed their show up with favorite tracks and even added some flavoring from Bruno Mars and Pharrell.
Latasha Williams, said, “This show was Amazing!I will definitely be purchasing their music to play at home.”
These were all elements that I noticed in the group and in the audience. Overall, the Robert Glasper Experiment was a magical experience it felt like we were all morphed into our own musical planet where only REAL TRUE MUSIC existed! We were blown away into a world with real superheroes that special powers were: live keys mastered by Robert, drums, lyrics, crazy bass, and let us not forget the special power in the voice box from Casey Benjamin. The concert was definitely a must see and I would recommend you to check them out while there on tour in a city near you.
