It seems to be an inherent component of the cranial activities of homo sapiens that they’re always searching for the next ‘what’s best’ in everything. The new nonpareil pizza, the Oscar -winning film, the planet’s fastest biped…you name it and we’re in pursuit of finding it. What’s especially sweet is if we can identify one of these world-wide winners before anyone else and if we can also proudly proclaim that we told you so!
Let’s examine the history of the discovery of one of these ‘supernovas’ and also see if we can identify another just getting ready to be noticed by the world.
When a French- Canadian cash-strapped, working class, deeply religious Roman Catholic couple celebrated the birth of their 14th child, a daughter, in the tiny town of Charlemagne, Quebec in 1968, they were exceedingly happy that the infant was healthy. Five years later, her singular talent started to bloom as the little girl made her first public appearance singing at her brother Michael’s wedding. It was clearly apparent that she was precocious and possessed a very pleasing & unique voice. Her father Adhemar, a butcher, convinced his wife, Therese, that opening a piano bar to augment their meager earnings would also serve the purpose of giving their youngest child a chance to perfect her singing.
At the age of 12, with her mother and another brother, Jacques, she wrote a song (English title: “It Was Only A Dream”) that Michael recorded, featuring her vocal. They sent the disc to the attention of a music producer’s name that they found on the liner notes of one of the most popular albums of the year. The producer was moved to tears by the pre-teenager’s voice and decided to make her a star.
He mortgaged almost everything he owned to fund her first album which made her an instant star in her home province. In the next six years, she had won vocal contests in Australia, Canada, France, Ireland, Japan, and Switzerland. Her rise to international superstardom was virtually assured.
In a 1994 interview with People Magazine detailing the sacrifices that she had to make to pursue her goal, she told the reporter ” I missed my family and my home, but I don’t regret having lost my adolescence. I had one dream: I wanted to be a singer.”
By now you may have guessed that the world renowned artist’s name is Celine Dion.
It is an absolute certainty that a frenzied international search is on for the next youngster to fill this superstar’s glittering slippers. As promised, we’re about to profile one potential candidate for you and give you a taste of her talent that has many cognescenti excited about her future. We’ll also provide you with video glimpses of her staggering versatility and virtuosity, as well as conclude with the information as to where (and when) you’ll be able to see her in action, live and in person, in the-not-too-distant future if you’d care to make your own comparisons.
She was born in Los Angeles, California on October 17th, 2002 to parents who had relocated to the United States from the Mexican state of Nayarit. At a very early age, she exhibited a love of music which encompassed singing at first and then blossomed, in elementary school, to include violin and trumpet.
In 2013, she applied for and won one of 44 Herbert Zipper Scholarships for students between the ages of 10 and 18 at the prestigious Colburn Community School of Performing Arts. The honor also included an all- expenses-paid scholarship for her to attend the prestigious institution and study voice with Kay Montgomery.
Almost immediately, Colburn’s maestros focused on teaching her the Bello Canto vocal techniques which led in record time to her becoming a Coloratura soprano. To get an idea of her growth in this area in less than a year, click on to a YouTube performance of the then 12 year old singing ‘Vilia’ from Franz Lehar’s famed operetta, ‘The Merry Widow,’ accompanied on piano by her Colburn accompanist Roberta Garten:
In that very same year, she also won the Los Angeles Secondary School Music Teachers Association’s ‘Grammy’ for her performance of the violin classics.
In the meantime (in her spare time?),she had also fallen in love with mariachi, the music of Mexico that had won the UNESCO (United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization) Patrimony for 2011. Although the vocal requirements are much different, her versatility shined through as she was asked to sing with many luminaries of that genre including Mariachi Champagne de Jeff Nevin, the two-time Grammy Award-winning Mariachi Divas de Cindy Shea, Mariachi Imperial de Mexico, Mariachi Monumental de Juan Jose Almaguer, Mariachi Reyna de los Angeles, Mariachi Sol de Mexico, and Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlan.
