I won’t lie, I was too excited when Beyonce dropped her self-titled internet breaking album this year. I also was super excited whenever Azealia Banks dropped her 90’s throwback album Broke With Expensive Taste. I was over the top thrilled with Mariah Carey’s vocal enchantment on Me. I am Mariah. The Elusive Chanteuse. There was also Drake’s seduction on “Nothing Was The Same”. Therefore, I felt like 2014 could not offer anything else when it comes to music. I was terribly wrong when Nicki Minaj dropped her album The Pinkprint, which on December 21, 2014 was estimated to push over 200,000 in sales.
Nicki Minaj’s The Pinkprint is the pinnacle album in the hip hop Queen’s career. This is her first album where the Frankenstein wigs, the wild and crazy voices, and the multiple personalities were pushed to the side to allow the true lyricist to do her thing. Nicki is an undeniable force in hip-hop and her album “The Pinkprint” is her nod to rap legend Jay Z’s “The Blueprint”. I love Nicki, I love music, and so when last week a copy of her album showed up in my email inbox ahead of time was one of those times that I loved my job too.
Having said before, this is a crucial time in Nicki’s career. After being roughly criticized by her mixtape days followers as becoming “too commercial” and “too pop”, it seems as if Nicki made a conscious effort to make everyone know what she is known for- being a rap beast. We were first introduced to the new Nicki on the instahit “Anaconda” earlier this year which was the raptress take at Sir Mix-a-lot’s hit “Baby Got Back”. Instead of the pink wigs and glitter bombs this time around, Nicki brought out the tough guns to remind us why she is the First Lady of Young Money. On tracks like “All Things Go”, “I Lied” and “The Crying Game” there is autobiographical Nicki, where we get a pure look into the lyricist’s personal life. The Young Berg track “Want Some More” and “Big Daddy” is where we get the Nicki that shows off the huge bulge in her crotch. On the crowd fave with Beyonce, “Feeling Myself” the head Barb and Queen Bey gives us another look at the fabulousness of the “Flawless” life. No Young Money masterpiece would be complete without the team, Nicki brought on Drake and Lil Wayne for the flirty “Only” and my personal fave on the album “Truffle Butter”.
It is undeniable that since Nicki Minaj came out the gate she has taken the rap game by storm. Having said that, there’s also been been as much criticism on her staying power. She has delivered. The Pinkprint will be the album that solidifies her position as the Queen of Hip Hop.
The Pinkprint is available for streaming on Spotify and for purchase here on Itunes.
