The holiday season is quickly approaching in the borough of Gettysburg, and with it so begins some of the area’s most sought-after annual traditions and events. One of Gettysburg’s favorite tourist spots will combine the holiday spirit of Christmas and the historical significance of the Civil War—A Civil War Christmas at the Shriver House.
Come out to experience a candlelight Christmas tour of the Shriver House Museum this season. Shriver House is now decked out and ready for a Civil War era-themed holiday setting. Daytime tours as well as candlelight evening tours will be ongoing throughout the season up through Dec. 20. The first candlelight tour will begin the evening of Thanksgiving, Nov. 27.
As you ascend through the halls of the Shriver House, your tour guide will lead you back in time to a Shriver family 1860s Christmas. Discover what Christmas was like for George and Hettie Shriver and their daughters Sadie and Mollie during the Civil War, and how this tragic time in history changed the holiday setting for all families.
The tour will lead you past a holiday setting of the Shriver home decorated and ready for Christmas festivities. See the candle-laden Christmas tree set at its place of honor on the parlor table as a crackling fire roars in the fireplace of a beautifully decorated room of hand-made holiday greenery.
The Shriver daughters, 7-year-old Sadie and 5-year-old Mollie have already hung their stockings out on the mantle and have just set out milk and cookies in anticipation of a coming visit from Santa Claus. Though the war was continually raging around families and loved ones throughout the nation, and soldiers never ceased to face the perils of suffering and death even during the holidays, Christmas time offered a momentary respite that helped to brighten the lives of those on the home front, even if just for one day.
Thanksgiving evening tours will be given 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. On Friday, Nov. 28, tours will be offered from noon to 5 p.m. and then candlelight tours will be given at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. On Saturday, Nov. 29 there will be tours from noon to 5 p.m. and then candlelight tours at 5 p.m., 7 p.m., and 9 p.m. All other Saturdays up through Dec. 20, tour times will be from noon to 5 p.m. and then candlelight tours will be given at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. Please note: candlelight tours require reservations which can be made by calling 717-337-2800.
