Sadly, those who are working against undocumented immigrants dare to call themselves compassionate conservative Christians?
There is nothing compassionate or Christian about turning away “The wretched refuse of your teeming shore” A centuries-long practice of welcoming immigrants has been good public policy for this nation.
By the way, no one would have to come into this nation as an “illegal” alien if their respective homelands offered them hope, jobs and a future. The undocumented risk life and limb for what most “Americans” take for granted and do nothing to show appreciation.
And talk about “public policy” when the undocumented have to hide and live in the shadows they are not getting the healthcare they need and are a threat to the entire nation’s public health.
When the undocumented are denied an education they are denied the opportunity to contribute to this nation.
When the undocumented are denied a driver’s license, an education, healthcare you have denied them a reason to care and a reason to step up to defend this nation when that is necessary. That requires being invested.
Those who come to this nation legally and/or illegally come here to work because there is no work in their homeland. There is no way forward, there is no hope in their respective countries.
The more invested in this nation hardworking immigrants to this nation are they more they will fight to insure its future.
There is no valid reason for denying would be immigrants a chance, some hope and a new home.
But for those who have no tolerance for immigration— take your foot off the collective neck of Mexico, Central and South America, allow them to develop.
If the US is lucky perhaps one day those countries south of El Rio Bravo will consider forming a union with us similar to the European Union.
Help those nations to create more jobs, a better way of life for their own and no one is going to need to try to get into this nation as an “illegal.”
There is so much that needs doing across the entire expanse of the Western Hemisphere and the US is such a small nation; approximately 5% of the world’s population.
The best way for the US to deal with the emerging nations with three and four times our population is with a strong Western Hemisphere Union that spans the distance from the Aleutian Islands to Tierra del Fuego.
The way we protect this nation and become a formidable force is by creating bridges that connect the length, width and breadth of the entire Western Hemisphere. That readers, is good public policy.
One other option is to leave the Statue of Liberty as is and openly wear the label, hypocrites and xenophobes as this nation disappears into the dust bin of history as so many others have done.
Still the words do inspire those of us who, “give a damn.”
“Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
“Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!” cries she
With silent lips. “Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”
