People generally like to be on the good side of individuals they live with or to at least be cordial. They want to make the living arrangement as peaceful and as smooth as possible. To be clear, people want an awesome roommate. Someone they can have that bromance or BFF lifestyle with. There are ways to make sure that you obtain this level of awesome and it’s simpler than you may think.
First off, the most important thing is to be you. If you were to prance around behaving like someone you are not, then everyone would get to know someone else and not the real you. Now if you are just a unpleasant person and you know that than change is a good thing for you. Idealistically you want your roommate to see how you behave so that they can see how the two of you will mesh. Not all of your characteristics will be compatible, but that is to be expected. Wouldn’t it be creepy to live with someone who is exactly like you? You want to talk to your roommate get a feel for their likes and dislikes. Start with general roommate things like cleanliness, music, guests and food. Food is a favorite among all people. It’s something that can be discussed for a very long time and you learn a lot about people through food. Obviously you learn the things that they love and loathe but you also learn the stories behind why they feel that way about those foods. Food is a gateway to untold possibilities because sharing is caring people, always remember that.
Food is important but you also must respect your roommate’s privacy and things, don’t just go through your roommates things without their permission. If you think it might be an issue if you borrow something, so it’s better to just ask. If you get one of those carefree roommates who doesn’t mind, it’s still a good idea to make sure it’s okay to take.
Take the extra time to get to know your roommate. If you’re going to be living together you might as well sit and talk and get to know each other. Be genuinely interested in your roommate, it’s not a choir to know someone, it’s a privilege.
Some people are more reserved than other but that doesn’t mean ignore them; you can still chat and make small talk. Greet your roommate and don’t treat them like a stranger when you see them outside of your place. They may just need some time before they begin to open up.
If you cook try to make more than enough for one person and offer some to your roommate. It’s a very nice gesture and is certainly appreciated, especially if your roommate doesn’t know how to cook many meals. Home cooked meals are always better than take out because take out lacks the love ingredient.
Being mindful and respectful is important but ultimately to have a good roommate relationship you just need to be nice and be interested in knowing about your roommate. It’s the little things that you do for people that add up on the grand scale of things.
