How does your family spend Thanksgiving? Well, if you’re part of the Gemini coven, you spend it plotting to escape the prison world the rest of your coven put you in, trying to kill one of your living children so that her psychopath of a twin can’t merge with her and take her magic, fearing returning home and being forced to fight with your twin/merge/live or die to become the coven’s leader or dead. Welcome to the Thursday, Nov.20 episode of “The Vampire Diaries,” 6×08 “Fade Into You.”
In a way, Stefan is lucky that he’s not invited to “TVD’s” Friendsgiving, though it does mean having Damon, Alaric and Ms. Cuddles telling him how wrong he is and that Caroline is a great girl and he’d be lucky to have her. It’s because he gets so frustrated with hearing about Caroline and he kicks Ms. Cuddles away from Damon that they even find the Gemini coven/Jo and Kai’s house hidden away by magic because of Bonnie’s magic in the bear. “Ms. Cuddles 1. Invisible creepy mansion 0.” (Speaking of, how cute is Damon with Ms. Cuddles? Very.) That’s when they meet Joshua Parker, the patriarch of the family, and he’s willing to do whatever he has to in order to make sure Kai doesn’t merge with Jo and take her magic.
Back at Whitmore College for Friendsgiving, Elena and Caroline have hope that they’ll see Bonnie again since they now know she’s alive. When Jo meets Liv, she wonders if they’ve met, but Liv’s too busy being in a horrible mood even though her brother is making her a retrospective video for their birthday and it’s a holiday. There’s good reason for that, and the truth comes out when Jo overhears herself in a video from Luke and Liv’s childhood. She’s their sister.
Bonnie’s Grams helped their family put Kai away, and it’s only when Liam questions the use of the word “coven” (prompting Tyler to try to cover up that they said “oven,” which makes zero sense) that they even remember that he’s in the room and hearing all this craziness about locking Kai away in a prison world. Caroline compels him away to search really hard for the wine opener in his room. Then it’s time for a quick Gemini Coven 101 lesson.
In their coven, twins are in line to be the leader, hence the name Gemini, and Kai wanted the position, but with Luke and Liv alive, that wasn’t possible. So he tried to kill them, but Jo protected them with her magic in 1994. The problem is, there aren’t two leaders. The twins merge their strength, and the strong one wins and absorbs the other twin’s power. The weaker twin dies. And you thought your family was messed up. But it gets worse. In order to make sure that Kai can’t merge with Jo and take her magic if he escapes the prison, Joshua does a spell to try to kill Jo.
Just after Elena had been wondering how Stefan had known he could trust her with what he is (he was in love with her), she is forced to reveal she’s a vampire to Liam in order to save Jo’s life since the med student’s answer to the situation is to try CPR and tell Elena to call 911. (Jo says it best when she tells him to shut up. Those in the dark are so not helpful in situations like this.) Elena then compels Liam to forget about the night and forget they even dated.
Damon, angry that he had to go through airport security only to get his brain scrambled by Joshua and find out that Jo has the ascendant five minutes from home, doesn’t take it very well when Alaric refuses to risk his girlfriend’s life. (Damon’s right when he questions that label since they’ve been on maybe three dates) And so Damon takes the easy route and compels Alaric to get the ascendant, whatever it takes. Why isn’t Alaric on vervain considering almost everyone he knows is a vampire?
Meanwhile, when Tyler checks on Liv after she walks out of Friendsgiving, she explains why she’s been pushing him away with, “When I look at you, I feel everything I don’t get to have.” How can he help her with the fact that she either dies and merges or kills her own brother? Well, he takes to single-handedly save her himself by taking her into Mystic Falls since magic doesn’t work there. He refuses to let her die. Anyone else feel like the Gemini coven could be involved in taking the anti-magic spell off the town so they can all enter Mystic Falls again?
Following the failed Friendsgiving and trip to Portland, Elena finds Damon at the bar and asks what he and Bonnie did for four months. They bickered, cooked, ate, and “talked. A lot,” he tells her, adding that Bonnie’s a good listener and listened to him for hours. When Elena asks what he talked about, he replies, “What do you think?” and she tells him she broke up with Liam. She admits she’s at a crossroads, and while she could live her life the way she should, she’d be happy, but she could also risk it all for “the tiny glimmer of a feeling” she can’t shake inside her, and she needs his help bringing Bonnie back so she can ask her for advice.
Finally, in the prison world in Portland in his old house, Kai forces Bonnie to sit down for Thanksgiving in May, which is totally not a thing, and tells her if she does, he’ll give her his car and they can go their separate ways. Of course he’s lying, but he’s lying with a Kai-creep twist to it. He tells her all about how his family tricked him into thinking he was going to become the new leader, only to lock him away (after he horror movie-stalked his siblings through the house and killed four of them), and he realized that Jo put her magic in the knife in the tree stump after Bonnie put hers in Ms. Cuddles. He takes Jo’s magic from the knife and stabs Bonnie, leaving her there bleeding. When she wakes up, Kai’s left his pager behind with a message: “I LIED.” He took the car. (And he totally didn’t want her playing with the pager earlier because he had that all planned, right?)
