“The Walking Dead” premiered its mid-season finale, “Coda,” on AMC on Sunday. This episode didn’t waste any time in getting right down to the action. Below is a spoiler-recap of the mid-season finale (can you believe half of Season 5 is over already?). Note that major spoilers are ahead if you are not caught up to the series.
In the mid-season finale, “Coda,” Rick is chasing after the cop that escaped after knocking Sasha out. Rick hits him in the back with the car, paralyzing him. After the two exchange some words, Rick shoots him in the head.
Meanwhile, Gabriel is at the school where Gareth and his people were. It seems like he is there to see if Rick and the others were saying the truth about Gareth’s crew being bad. Gabriel spots Bob’s cooked leg, so he believes Rick’s story. However, as Gabriel goes back to the church, he is followed by a herd of walkers. Michonne chops open the door to let him in, but the walkers take over the church and they must all leave.
As Michonne fights the walkers, she has Judith strapped on her back. Poor baby, if that situation was real, Judith’s neck would have probably snapped. Eventually, Michonne, Gabriel, Carl, and Judith, wait outside of the church. Suddenly, Abraham’s group arrives. They are all in the firetruck and Glenn tells Michonne about Eugene’s lie. When Maggie asks about the others, Michonne informs her about Beth being alive and how the rest went to get her.
At the hospital, Dawn is trying to contact the cops that are with Rick and feels frustrated that they are not responding back. Beth asks if everything is ok and Dawn just says that they don’t always reply, not appearing too worried. Later on, Beth is hanging out by the elevator where Noah escaped. Dawn comes in and they begin to talk. Another one of Dawn’s cops enters, catching them talking. The cop tells Dawn that he will be telling the rest of their people that Dawn is losing it and will no longer be in charge. The two then begin to fight, Beth helps Dawn and pushes the cop down the elevator. As Dawn and Beth talk in Carol’s room, Carol moves, beginning to wake up.
Two more cops show up and meet Rick – that’s where Rick proposes the exchange for Beth an Carol. In the next scene, Rick is seen walking into the hospital with the two cops that he had hostage. Noah, Daryl, Tyreese, and Sasha, are also with Rick. Beth is wearing her regular clothes and is pushing Carol on a wheelchair, everything seems to be going fine for the exchange (which can only mean big trouble is coming).
“One of yours for one of mine,” Dawn instructs. After the exchange is made, they all begin to walk away, but Dawn says, “I just need Noah, then you can leave.” Noah volunteers to give himself up and heads towards them. An angry Beth walks up to Dawn and tells her, “I get it now.” Beth then stabs her and Dawn shoots Beth in the head in defense. Shocked, Daryl shoots Dawn dead. Before any more blood is shed, a cop tells them that it’s over – that it was all about Dawn.
The other cops offer Rick and the others to stay, but Rick tells them no and that they are welcomed to come with him. Outside, Michonne, Maggie, and the others arrive. Daryl is carrying Beth’s body and Maggie breaks into tears. Noah is shown with them.
Little by little, Morgan is catching up to Rick. Morgan is shown at the school (where Gareth was), following the tracks. He follows more tracks that lead him to the church, where he prays and finds what Abraham wrote to Rick, “Sorry I was an a–hole, come to Washington, the world will need a Rick Grimes.” Morgan looks surprised to see that he is close to Rick.
