Information regarding the new companion series to AMC’s The Walking Dead has been announced, and fan reaction has been lukewarm.
The working title for the new series is Cobalt, and it will be presented as a prequel to the original series. Viewers will get to see how the zombie virus outbreak began, and how it spread to become the civilization killer that is depicted in the original The Walking Dead. The show will be set in LA, which has disappointed many fans who were hoping for a cold weather environment to compliment the hot southern climate of Georgia.
Cobalt is an interesting title, as it could reveal key information about the origination of the zombie virus. According to webelements, “Cobalt is a brittle, hard, silver-grey transition metal with magnetic properties similar to those of iron (ferromagnetic). Cobalt is present in meteorites…Cobalt salts in small amounts are essential to many life forms, including humans. It is at the core of a vitamin called vitamin-B12. Grazing animals do not to do well in areas where there is little cobalt in the soil.”
A chemical that is found on meteorites that is essential for many life forms? Could be interesting…
The Inquisitr reports that “Many key roles for The Walking Dead spinoff have already been cast. Actor Cliff Curtis (Gang Related) will play Sean Cabrera, the Rick Grimes of the Cobalt group. He’s a divorced teacher who just wants to do right by everyone in his life. The role of his rebellious teenage son Cody has not been cast yet.
Another yet-to-be cast role is that of Nancy Tompkins, a guidance counselor who likely works at the same school as Sean Cabrera. The single mom has two teenage children whose roles have been cast. Frank Dillane (Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince) will play her screwed-up son Nick, and Alycia Debnam Carey (Into the Storm) will play her ambitious, level-headed daughter Ashley.
The Walking Dead spinoff will also introduce another Andrea who is described as “a somewhat wilted flower child” trying to recover from a bad marriage.”
So… there will be a hardened hero, a couple of angry teenagers and some women who will (hopefully) not be relying on the menfolk to keep them safe. There is no word yet on whether or not a virgin-redneck-with-a-heart-gold will be introduced, but since the series will not be based on any existing comic book, there is no set cast of characters to guess about.
Could there be some character crossovers that occur? Its unlikely that Daryl Dixon would be in California, but perhaps the original Andrea? Laurie Holden played civil rights attorney pre-apocalypse, so she could have a reason to be in LA. There are rumors that Morales, played by Juan Gabriel Pareja, may make an appearance in the new show. The Morales family was part of Season 1, but they parted ways with the rest of the survivors, choosing to head towards Birmingham, Alabama instead of the CDC.
The series pilot is set to begin shooting in early 2015.
