On November 30 SpoilerTV posted the first promo for the upcoming ninth episode of the fifth season of the AMC drama “The Walking Dead,” which just finished its midseason finale. The final eight episodes of the season will begin airing on Sunday, February 8, 2015 and the sixth season will begin filming in May. The new thirty second promo reveals that the group is once again on the move without a safe place to call home.
Show runner Scott M. Gimple confirmed that the series would change every eight episodes, and the fifth season is no exception. After Beth’s shocking death at the hospital and the exposure of Eugene’s lie, the group now needs a new purpose. The promo shows the church group and Abraham’s group all reunited again and walking along the road. There doesn’t seem to be a time jump, as everyone is still very upset about losing Beth in Atlanta.
There is a voice over of Michonne explaining that the group is “one hundred miles away” and it could be “someplace safe” for the group. It’s unclear if she is talking about the Alexandria Safe Zone from the comics, although it’s unlikely the group would head up there after Eugene lied about the cure. The other possibility is that the group heads for Richmond, Virginia which is Noah’s hometown. Noah mentioned returning after he found his uncle in Atlanta, but he ended up at the hospital with Beth and the others.
The group struggled to survive after leaving the farm in season two, and lived on the run from a herd of walkers with little food until the prison. Machine doesn’t want the group to just make it because everyone should be safe. Rick reveals that the group “will be okay because this is how we survive.” The group is not on in immediate danger since no one is after them, but the walkers are still a very real threat.
On November 30 YouTube.com posted the extended promo for the new episode, which reveals that the group will be facing even more danger than before. Tyreese and Noah are shown walking up to an abandoned house, while Glenn and some others are shown checking cars for walkers and supplies. Maggie is shown crying next to a fire since the group is still not over the loss of Beth. Rick, Michonne and Tyreese are shown barricading a wall from a herd of walkers and then run in the other direction. It’s possible the group has found Morgan’s old town or somewhere previously established as a safe place.
Everyone in the group seems to get some distance from each other, as Daryl falls to his knees in the woods and Father Gabriel checks his Bible. At one point, three walkers have grabbed onto Rick and are about to bit his arm, before the scene cuts away to Sasha and Maggie holding up guns. The group also fights off some walkers in a house, while one gruesome walker walks directly into the camera frame. Noah is shown looking upset as a car full of piled up walkers is revealed.
The final eight episodes will take the survivors on a new journey away from downtown Atlanta. Morgan’s story seems to be taking place a short time after Rick’s and it’s unclear if the two story lines will meet up in the second half of season five. The other eight episodes will focus on the group finding a new shelter and encountering more dangers. Alexandra Breckenridge will make her debut as Samantha in the second half as well.
