Season 5 of “The Walking Dead” on AMC continued tonight Feb. 22 with an episode that took Rick and his group of survivors on another wild adventure in post-apocalyptic America. Many fans of the television show are on edge after losing Beth and Tyreese in recent episodes and are wondering who will be next to exit the show. It’s been made abundantly clear over the years that virtually no cast member is safe from being the next to meet their gruesome fate. Fans can breath a collective sigh of relief that no cast members were lost this week, but that doesn’t mean that everyone will be safe in the coming weeks. Nothing is safe in the zombie apocalypse and it’s been a miracle that Judith has survived as long as she has so far.
Judith is by far the most vulnerable member of the group on The Walking Dead and easily the next victim of the apocalypse. Glenn is also someone whose days are most likely numbered. Will it be at the hands of the newest character Aaron? It’s hard to say, but Aaron sure had one heck of an episode this week as he argued the reasons that Rick and the group should follow him back to Alexandria where his sanctuary awaited them. It seemed like the entire episode was one long negotiation, but in all actuality a lot of other things happened as well. Subtle interactions within the group redefined relationships and group order and rank. Michonne stepped up her role as a leader this week, and while not directly challenging Rick, she definitely asserted a new level of influence that was previously unseen. Abraham and Rosita also seemed to share a moment that started to smooth over the rough edges of their rocky relationship.
Rick continued to evolve this week as his character becomes more complex and he follows a path that leans towards the dark side. Rick felt no guilt when he knocked out Aaron and tied him up because his number one goal right now is protecting the people he knows and preventing anyone from hurting his group. At this point Rick simply isn’t in a trusting mood, and considering the people who have tried to kill the group over the past few seasons, it’s no wonder. The bitter sting of Terminus is still fresh in everyone’s mind. After much debate, the group drives through a hoard of zombies on the way to Alexandria, and upon arrival they are forced with an option to give up their weapons for sanctuary. It’s anyone’s guess until next week how Rick and his group will acclimate to their new surroundings and whether or not Alexandria is a safe place.
