I got this interesting fundraising letter from the Daily Kos over the holidays.
Here it is in its entirety.
Hi Philip, I’m the general manager of Daily Kos. I oversee our income and expenses, so I don’t normally write emails like this. But I’m writing you today to talk about our finances.
Daily Kos is a small organization with a big audience. We had 67 million readers this year, making us one of the largest sites on the internet. We have costs like any other major website—like staff and servers—but we keep things running on an annual budget of just $5 million.
A couple of years ago, the model for online publications started to change. Ad revenue started to decline, even as traffic skyrocketed. We made a decision to ask our readers to help make up the difference, and you came through for us in a huge way. Now, we need your help just one more time—we’re just $17,256 away from closing the books on 2014.
If everyone reading this email gave just $1, the fundraiser would be over in an hour.
Can you chip in to help Daily Kos keep fighting?
Will Rockafellow, Daily Kos
And I am a reader and a participant at the Daily Kos. It’s probably an incredible Internet success story. And its probably your go to place for news about Democratic candidates and policies. But I didn’t give them one red cent and I’ll give you three big reasons:
One/) Too Much Censorship.
I’ve been censored so many times at the Daily Kos that I’m on my third fake identity and no I won’t reveal it here because then I’ll have to sign in under another fake name. And I wish I could say that you would be banned for things that make sense but you can be banned pointing out very obvious things about what’s wrong with the current day Democrats. In fact, a long time ago, someone created a number of badges as to why they could be banned from the Daily Kos, everything from “too lefty” to “I mentioned Israel” , which is what got me banned. You can read about those badges here. I published them all here and at a site called American Samizdat.
So, even though I’m on a mailing list under my latest alias, you might try not banning someone who you’re hustling for money. Get rid of of the thought crime and I would consider a donation. I give five bucks a month to Firedoglake and I’ve been doing that for several years now. They wouldn’t have gotten a cent if they had ever censored me.
Two) You Should be Fully Funded by the DNC
What’s also curious is that you’re not fully funded by the DNC. It’s clear that you’re an online asset to the party and both labor and the DNC should be funding you indirectly with ads out the yin yang or at least renting your membership list, if you allow that and I don’t know why you wouldn’t. The reason that you have to scratch and beg the DNC establishment is that the DNC has become a very corrupt party that’s in bed with the republicans on many of the important issues of the day. I should point out that if you bring this issue up over, say, the completely horrible TPP bill that strengthens the GOP in the long run and undercuts union strength, and point out that progressives might consider some third party candidates then you’ll be banned from the Daily Kos.
Three.) You’re an arm of the Democratic Party, not Progressive Values
I vote for Democrats not because they’re Dems but because I believe in progressive values and there’s only one Elizabeth Warren wing in both parties. One progressive value: not censoring people who disagree with you. I would never give money to a site that’s run like Pravda.
