A Marine veteran of the Iraq war, John Kevin Wood, who was ordered to stay away from his daughter’s Maryland high school after an intense argument over a lesson on Islam, has not given up his fight when his daughter was forced to affirm that “Allah is the same god that is worshiped in Christianity and Judaism” and will now be represented by the Thomas More Law Center (TMLC) with their case against the school, WND reported on Sunday.
Fox News had reported in late October 2014 that Wood went to La Plata High School in La Plata, Maryland and challenged a history assignment requiring students to list the benefits of Islam and was banned from the property. The school claims that Wood allegedly made a threat in which Wood’s said was not true and has witnesses that collaborated with his story. School officials then gave the daughter an “F” for the class and ordered John Wood to stay away from the school.
WND reported that a reporter from a local news station had contacted the radical Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) organization, where a spokeswoman, Zainab Chaudry, said that Wood’s actions are attributing to the “growing anti-Muslim sentiment” in America. However in an interview with the local news station, the Marine veteran and his wife told the reporter that such current events such as ISIS beheading Christians and other innocent people should be included in any teachings about Islam in which the schools are not doing. “That’s, I guess, our biggest concern right now is how they’re teaching it and what is really going on right now in this world,” said Melissa Wood to the reporter. John Wood added, “Schools are not teaching about radical Islam right now… going around beheading people in America and Australia and they’re not teaching that. They’re just teaching, “Oh, it’s peaceful… and it’s not peaceful.”
In representing the Woods, TMLC stated that Wood, a former Marine who served in Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm, lost friends in that action, and saw firsthand the destruction caused in the name of Allah and that Islam is not “a religion of peace;” and he would not budge from his position. He refused to allow La Plata High School to subject his daughter to Islamic indoctrination despite threatened academic consequences against his daughter. TMLC also subsequently filed a request for records on November 19, 2014, relating to the case under Maryland’s Public Information Act.
Richard Thompson, TMLC’s President and Chief Counsel stated in representing the Wood’s family, “Adding insult to injury, in an arrogant and unnecessary display of power, La Plata’s principal issued a written “No Trespass” notice, which denied this former Marine who stood in harm’s way defending our country including the principal and her staff, any access to school grounds. The school’s actions not only dishonored John Wood’s service, but the service of all men and women in our Armed Forces who defended our nation from Islamic violence. True to his Marine training, John Wood stood his ground. He did not retreat. Yes, his daughter has received a failing grade in her World History Class… but the story is not yet over.”
